Auction items at the second annual Camden House Golf Tournament March 8 will be a one-
night stay at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, a watch, golf at Laurel Island Links and dinner cer
tificates for Fernandina Beach restaurants.
Tournament funds will
help defray the costs of shel
tering domestic violence vic
tims at Camden
House. Starting in January,
Camden House resumed
sheltering after nearly a four-
year absence due to lack of
funding. While sheltering is
a vital and necessary step in
Camden House’s quest to
support its clients, it is also
expensive. Victims and their
children already are being
sheltered in the House.
Currently, Camden House
receives no state or federal
funding to offset the cost of
sheltering. It is striving to re
gain state certification but
until then it must rely on
grants and fundraisers to help
with sheltering expenses and
other parts of its $300,000-
plus annual budget.
“We are pleased that we
have begun sheltering do
mestic violence victims,”
Boden said. “But sheltering is
very expensive. In January,
we funded the equivalent of
158 bed nights. The success
of our golf tournament will
go a long way toward offset
ting our ongoing expenses.”
Those bed nights are ex
pected to increase during the
upcoming months.
Camden House serves a
vital function within Camden
County. Boden said domestic
violence is a horrific problem
in the county.
Over a year’s period, local
authorities received four-plus
calls a day from domestic vi
olence victims and they say
another three to four times
that number daily never
make that call. That means
more than 3,000 incidents of
domestic violence occur in
Camden County every
year. Now, those victims have
a place to go to escape the vi
olence.
Thanks to the efforts of
many in the community, in
cluding Lowe’s, Camden
House already has under
gone significant improve
ments over the past
months. Carpet has been re
placed, the parking lot has
been upgraded, new play
ground equipment and fenc
ing has been installed, the
front entrance has been
power-washed and painted,
handicap facilities have been
added or improved, and staff
has been added.
“We are striving to provide
a safe haven for the victims of
domestic violence,” Boden
said. “We are looking to
events like our golf tourna
ment to help us continue to
be able to shelter and help
victims end their nightmare.”

On Feb. 6, St. Marys got
