Local Catholics react to pope’s retirement

As a white Italian air force
helicopter flew Pope Bene
dict away from the Vatican on
Thursday, Catholic church
members in Camden County
expressed support for his de
cision to retire.
Benedict announced Feb.
11 that he would become the
first pope in six centuries to
resign as leader of the
Catholic Church. The posi
tion officially became vacant
Thursday evening, and cardi
nals are expected to elect a
new pope by mid-March.
“I think he made the right
choice,” said Marianne Feller,
a St. Marys resident and
member of Our Lady Star of
the Sea Catholic Church
(OLSS).
Feller said she respects
Benedict’s decision and en
couraged Catholics to “stay
faithful” as the process con
tinues.
She did not seem con
cerned, as some did after
Benedict’s announcement,
that having a retired former
pope and a new pope in the
Vatican would be confusing
or divisive for the church. She
also said she wasn’t concerned
by Benedict’s request that he
be called “pope emeritus”
after his retirement.
“It’s just a title,” she said.
OLSS member Ed Marx of
St. Marys also said he was be
hind Benedict.
“We’re all for him,” he
said.
Marx acknowledged that
Benedict, 85, could simply be
unable to keep up with the

demands of the pope’s sched
ule.
“He is getting old and
frail,” Marx said. “That posi
tion needs a younger man
and a younger man’s mind.”
Despite his age, Benedict is
partly known as being the
pope who introduced the
Vatican to several aspects of
modem culture, such as Twit
ter. As the helicopter took off
Thursday, he sent his last
tweet: “Thank you for your
love and support. May you al
ways experience the joy that
comes from putting Christ as
the centre of your lives.”
As for the future, Feller
said she hopes to see the new
pope continue as the ambas
sador and prayerful leader the
church has always known.
“I’d like to see that con
tinue,” she said.
