Obituary
Grace Louise Norton McIntyre
MclNTYRE — Grace Louise
Norton McIntyre, 100, of St.
Marys and formerly of Hamlet,
N.C., died Friday, Feb. 15,
2013, after a short illness and
preceded by a long and won
derful life.
She was born in Laurin-
burg, N.C., on Feb. 11, 1913,
to Charlie David Norton and
Mattie Ellar Brown Norton.
She married the love of her
life, Bernard Leach McIntyre,
in Bennettsville, S.C., and
they had two daughters,
Dorothy Louise McIntyre
Baier and Betty Arlen McIn
tyre Currier, all of whom pre
ceded her in death.
The McIntyres raised their
family in Ellerbe, N.C., and
later in Portsmouth, Va., where
she worked for a short time
with GE assembling televi
sions. Retiring to Hamlet, her
pastimes included sewing, an
tique shopping, gardening,
painting, photography, hand
crafts and cooking.
She was especially well
known for her homemade
peanut brittle, which she gave
as gifts and was sold by friends
at flea markets and swap
meets all over North Carolina.
Her greatest passion, how
ever, was gossiping and en
tertaining with friends and
family around the kitchen table
while preparing a mess of but
ter beans and okra or what
ever was in season fresh from
her garden.
Later in life she moved to St.
Marys to be near family. She
rarely missed an episode of
“The Price Is Right,” became a
champion bingo player on the
senior circuit and last year was
named Valentine Queen at the
Southeast Georgia Health
System Senior Care Center in
St. Marys.
Survivors include six grand
children and six great-grand
children, from whom she often
requested kisses with the
phrase, “Give me some
sugar!” Celebrating with Grace
at her 100th birthday party
were all six grandchildren and
one great-grandchild, Allison
Grace Baier, as well as other
family, friends and Buster the
therapy dog.
In lieu of flowers, contribu
tions in Grace's name to Hos
pice of the Golden Isles in
Brunswick would be appreci
ated. A memorial service to
celebrate her life will be held at
6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at
Allison Memorial Chapel in St.
Marys with pastor George An
derson of New Hope Baptist
Church in St. Marys officiating.
Her ashes will be buried next to
her husband in Hamlet at a
later date.
