‘The Last Five Years’ tickets now on sale
Tickets for “The Last Five
Years,” the latest production
by St. Marys Little Theatre
(SMLT), are now on sale.
St. Marys Little Theatre
will present the off-Broad-
way smash in April.
“While it may not be as
widely known as some of our
previous productions like
‘Man of La Mancha’ or ‘The
Fantasticks,’ in its relatively
short existence, the show has
amassed an impressive fol
lowing of die-hard fans. I am
most certainly among their
ranks,” said Steven L. Jones,
director and star of the up
coming production. “That’s
why I requested to direct, as
well as star. It was extremely
important to me that my di
rectorial debut be for a pro
duction that I’m passionate
about.”
“The Last Five Years”
opened off-Broadway in
March 2002 at the Minetta
Lane Theatre in New York
City, N.Y. That same year, it
was nominated for seven
Drama Desk Awards, two
Lucille Lortel Awards and
the Outer Critics Circle
Award for Outstanding Off-
Broadway Musical.
Writer/Composer Jason
Robert Brown, of “Songs
For a New World” and “Pa
rade” fame, took home the
Drama Desk Awards for
Outstanding Music and
Lyrics for the production.
The show, set in modern-
day New York City, follows
the five-year relationship be
tween Jamie Wellerstein, a
suddenly successful writer,
and Cathy Hyatt, a strug
gling stage actress.
“Now, that may not sound
like anything new to the av
erage audience member,”
said Jones. “What is unique
about this show is the way
the story unfolds and the fact
that there are no supporting
characters, just the star-
crossed couple.”
The narrative is seen from
both perspectives, with
Wellerstein’s version unfold
ing chronologically, from be
ginning to end, and Hyatt’s
reverse-chronologically,
from the end to the begin
ning. The only time the two
characters occupy the same
moment is a touching scene
in the middle of the show.
Playing opposite Jones as
Jamie is Megan Friese-Kauf-
man as Cathy, who is also
pulling double duty as the
musical director. Though
this will be Jones’ first pro
duction as director and
Friese-Kaufman’s first on
stage role with the organiza
tion, both Jones and
Friese-Kaufman have exten
sive experience with SMLT
Jones’ previous credits in
clude roles in “Man of La
Mancha,” “The Fantasticks”
and he was most recently
seen as The Grinch in
“Where Are You Christ
mas?” Friese-Kaufman has
served as musical director for
Probate forum
rescheduled,
set for March 13
The Democrats of Cam
den County announce that
the probate candidate forum
previously scheduled for
March 12, as printed in the
March 1 edition of the Trib
une & Georgian, has been
changed to March 13 at 6:30
p.m. at the county annex be
hind the public library in
Kingsland.
The Democrats apologize
for any inconvenience this
change has caused, but it is
occasioned out of deference
to the people of Waverly,
who conflicted with Democ
rats’ previous plans.
All citizens of Camden
County are invited to this
forum, the last to be held be
fore the election on March
19. Come and meet the can
didates for probate judge, lis
ten to their positions on the
various issues and make a de
cision on how to vote on
March 19.

every SMLT production to
date.
Jones added, “I’m very ex
cited to have Megan playing
Cathy. I know, once the au
dience hears her heart-
wrenching rendition of the
show-opening, ‘Still Hurt
ing,’ we’ll have them
hooked.”
On top of the numerous
awards and nominations that
the show has garnered in its
12-year existence, Brown’s
follow-up to the Tony win
ning “Parade” has also re
ceived stellar reviews from
several theatrical critics.
Michael Kuchwara of Asso
ciated Press said, “The show
is brimming with persistent
melodies, thoughtful lyrics
and a heartfelt story that is
compelling despite the na
ture of its plot.” Joel Hen
ning of The Wall Street
Journal said, “Mr. Brown has
created an utterly bewitching
little musical.” But perhaps
the best description of the
show comes from Mary E.
Peters of The Boston The
atre Review who wrote
“Brown’s ‘Last Five Years’
took me on a journey
through lost love, failed art,
forgotten connection and
back again — a trip that is
well worth taking.”
Performance dates for
“The Last Five Years” will be
Friday and Saturday, April 5
and 6, and Friday and Satur
day, April 12 and 13. The
time will be 7 p.m. There
will also be a matinee per
formance at 2 p.m. April 13.
All SMLT performances will
be held at Theatre by the
Trax, located at 1000 Os
borne Road in St. Marys.
Tickets are $12 each or
$10 if purchased in groups of
10 or more. They can be
purchased at the St. Marys
Welcome Center, On the
Green Salon & Day Spa and
The Friese Studio of Music.
