About 25 residents and

City manager Steve Crow

State park earns nod

Crooked River State Park was recognized for its facilities,
staff, equipment and programs.
Crooked River State Park
near St. Marys was recently
awarded the Most Out
standing Park Operation
Award by the Georgia De
partment of Natural Re
sources (DNR).
Awards were presented
during a recent conference
co-hosted by the park sys
tem and Friends of Georgia
State Parks & Historic Sites.
According to region man
ager Tommy Turk,
“Crooked River is a park
that does all things well.”
The facilities and grounds
are well maintained, and
park staff complete many
projects that would normally
be done by outside contrac
tors, saving state funds.
Equipment, shared by many
parks within southern Geor
gia, is also kept in good con
dition by Crooked River
staff. Rangers assist in re
gional law enforcement
training, and search and res
cue operations.
The park is also known
for its nature center and out
standing programming, such
as guided kayak trips and
birding classes.
Located on the southern
tip of Georgia’s “Colonial
Coast,” the park is consid
ered the perfect spot for en
joying the Intracoastal
Waterway and maritime for
est. Campsites are sur
rounded by palmettos and
Spanish moss, while cottages
are set near the tidal river. A
boat ramp is popular with
anglers and paddlers, and
down the road is the ferry to
famous Cumberland Island
National Seashore, known
for secluded beaches and
wild horses.
