Visitors help pay
into SPLOST
Dear Editor,
Many decisions are com
plicated; occasionally, one is
easy. For me, the decision on
whether we in Camden
County should vote to con
tinue Special Purpose Local
Option Sales Tax is easy:
• Do we want to expose
the credit rating of our
county and its cities to risk,
probably see increased water
fees, run the risk of higher
property taxes, abandon
needed capital projects and
forego having visitors pay
part of our expenses?
If so, vote no on SPLOST
• Do we want to protect
our credit rating, keep water
fees comparatively low, min
imize pressure to increase
property taxes, accomplish
needed capital projects and
have our visitors help pay our
finances?
If so, vote yes on SPLOST.
I am enthusiastically vot
ing yes on SPLOST on
Tuesday, March 19.

Please vote yes
on SPLOST VII
Dear Editor,
The critically important
Special Purpose Local Op
tion Sales Tax VII vote is
next Tuesday, March 19, a
vote to continue a 1-penny
tax on each sales dollar in
Camden County. This is not
a new tax, having been ap
proved by the voters of Cam
den County every five or six
years since the 1980s.
Why would voters approve
this tax over so many years?
Because it has proven to
be an extremely beneficial
and relatively painless
method to fund countywide
capital improvements for fa
cilities, roads and utilities,
needed fire and police
equipment, emergency and
communication services, and
park and recreation en
hancements throughout
Camden County.
In St. Marys, the city is
projected to receive some
$18 million over the next six
years. Those funds are essen
tial to offset the $1.5 million
water/sewer debt increase
that the city must begin pay
ing the end of 2014.
In addition, the city is
faced with many capital im
provement needs like the re
placement of extremely
deteriorated water and sewer
lines throughout downtown
St. Marys.
We must pay our debts,
make capital improvements,
replace aging infrastructure
and equipment, provide
quality of life enhancements
and foster economic devel
opment opportunities.
Without SPLOST, those
funds will need to be raised
through some combination
of increased water/sewer
fees, increased property
raxes, reduced services or
other much more painful
methods, especially consid
ering that folks who pass
through Camden County
offset what each taxpayer ac
tually pays by some 12 per
cent.
What other rax provides
any offset or percentage re
duction to the citizens of
Camden County?
Please vote on March 19,
and please vote yes on
SPLOST VII.
