A group of vacationing
middle schoolers and adults
will soon have the opportu
nity to witness the Wreath
Laying Ceremony at Arling
ton National Cemetery.
The group’s participation
was confirmed months ago at
the request of teacher Love
Merryman.
“The Wreath Laying Cer
emony is a very humbling
event,” said Merryman, or
ganizer of the trip.
One of the most sacred
shrines in the United States,
The Tomb of the Unknowns,
was established to honor vet
erans and their families who
have sacrificed their lives for
freedom. These 60 spring
breakers will attend the cere
mony at the Tomb of the Un
knowns on Monday, April 1.
Unknown soldiers from
World War I, World War II,
Vietnam and the Korean War
are interred in the Tomb of
the Unknowns with the first
being 1921, and last in 1984,
in a ceremony presided over
by President Ronald Regan.

a civil watchman stood guard
over the tomb, but now the
task is assigned to members
of the 3rd Infantry Honor
Guard. Each guard must be a
citizen of the U.S., have an
unspotted record and have
perfect military posture. The
guard is required to walk the
63 feet at the tomb in a per
fect stride of 21 steps, face the
tomb for 21 seconds, turn
and wait 21 seconds and then
return to the other side in 21
paces.
In military and state cere
monies, the number 21 is the
highest salute given to digni
taries.
Student Anderson McNeill
stated, “I have heard stories
about my great uncle who
was missing in action, and an
other who was killed in action
during World War II over
Germany, so this opportunity
has significant meaning to
me.”
Eighth-grader Cumah
Holt stated she is excited
about the trip, but especially
about this venue because her
dad is in the Navy.
Ally Holloway, whose
mom was in the Army and fa
ther in the Navy, and Megan
Tanner, whose father was in
the Marine Corps, are two
additional student partici
pants.
The wreath which will be
laid will be furnished by the
tour company, World Strides.
The entire tour group will be
present for the event.
