Two Camden County
High School band students
recently survived several
rounds of cuts to make the
All-State band for 2013.
Freshman Chloe Bragg
and sophomore Joshua Clif
ford earned spots in the band
on bassoon and bass clarinet,
respectively, and endured
two days of rehearsals for the
band’s March 2 concert in
Savannah.
“Going in front of the
judges is always nerve rack
ing,” Clifford said of the two
rounds of tryouts in Appling
County and Warner Robins.
This was Clifford’s first
year to make All-State band,
a goal he has had since he
began auditioning in seventh
grade. When the call finally
came, Clifford tore down
stairs to tell his parents.
“My parents thought I fell
down the stairs,” he said with
a laugh. “I really felt good
this year.”
Bragg, who said she enjoys
telling stories through music,
began playing bassoon in
sixth grade.
“I just like the way it
sounds,” she said, adding she
noticed immediately how the
quality of her fellow musi
cians improved with each
round of auditions.
Band director Allan Smith
said past years have seen one
student per year make All-
State band, so having two in
one year is special.
“We’re very proud of each
of them,” he said.
