Westberry writes book about St. Marys cemetery
Submitted photos
Local historian and genealogist Kay Westberry has authored a book about her research into
historical and biographical data of those buried in St. Marys’ Oak Grove Cemetery. A book
signing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Once Upon a Bookseller.
The history book, “Oak
Grove Cemetery: Quiet Re
flections on the History of
Saint Marys and Its People,”
is now available to those in
terested in learning of the
people who made the town
of St. Marys what it is today.
Local historian and ge
nealogist Kay Westberry has
spent three years in this ef
fort assembling historical
and biographical data on
those buried in Oak Grove
and more.
She has developed a fasci
nation with the artwork of
the noted stone cutters rep
resented there, the symbol
ism used on the old stones,
the yellow fever epidemics,
men who made their living
on the waters as well as sol
diers of the Revolution, the
War of 1812 and the Civil
War and other personalities.
Extensive research and
several hundred color and
black and white photos make
this book a collector’s item.
It was the original intent of
the author to record and
publish information on Oak
Grove which had never pre
viously been recorded and to
print it in such a manner as
to be used primarily in
archives and libraries for his
torical and genealogical re
search. Thus, the first
edition of the 360-page book
is a limited edition of 100
copies printed on very heavy
paper with a hardback bind
ing meant to stand up to cen
turies of library reference
use. A second edition will be
printed if interest warrants.
The book is available from
Once Upon a Bookseller, lo
cated at 207 Osborne St. in
St. Marys, or from the au
thor. The cost of the book is
$75. A book-signing event
will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Sat
urday, April 20, at the book
store.
About the author
Native Savannahian Kay
Lynn Westberry has lived as
far north and as far south on
the Georgia coast as is possi
ble. After being heavily in
volved in civic and charitable
organizations in Chatham,
Glynn and Camden coun
ties, she relocated to St.
Marys in 1989 and became
enamored with the history of
this place.
Formerly a newspaper ed
itor who received many
Georgia Press Association
awards for her column, sec
tion, series and photographs,
she now enjoys writing about
family history and especially
about the history of the
Georgia coast.
Of the awards she has re
ceived in her various endeav
ors, one of the awards she
values most is the honor of
being selected by the Guale
Historical Society as its 2012
Camden County Historian
of the Year.
She has written and pub
lished two family history
books, “Going Home,” the
histories of five families of
Tattnall County, and “The
Clarys of Appling County.”
For the past three years,
she has concentrated on the
history of St. Marys as repre
sented by the Oak Grove
Cemetery.
