United Way
aids nonprofits
The board of directors of
United Way of Camden
County recently voted to
award $30,000 in grants to a
variety of nonprofit organi
zations that focus on health,
income and education.
Local nonprofit organiza
tions were invited last spring
to submit grant applications
for programs that address
those initiatives, including
the measurable results they
expected from those pro
grams.
“In the past year, United
Way of Camden County has
made a commitment to fo
cusing on education, income
and health in Camden.
Through the various transi
tions of the economy, these
aspects have become more
vital than ever before,” said
Shantay Gibbs, United Way
executive director. “We are
proud to announce the or
ganizations that will be aid
ing United Way in achieving
these goals.”

Grant recipients were se
lected by the board based on
a range of criteria, such as
measurable impact, commu
nity need, agency capacity
and available resources.
“This has been an even
more competitive grant year
than in past years. As funds
become more limited, yet
needs continue to grow, the
process of community in
vestment becomes even
more difficult,” Gibbs said.
“Each of these exceptional
organizations will be focus
ing United Way funds to
ward community health,
school readiness, early child
hood education, emergency
services or income self-suffi
ciency. We are looking for
ward to an outstanding year.”

Obituaries
Hugh Egbert Rhodes
RHODES — Ret. U.S. Air
Force Lt. Col. Hugh Egbert
“Dusty” Rhodes, 96, passed
Sunday, July 14, 2013. Dusty
was a longtime resident of
Shalimar, Fla.
Dusty graduated Robert E.
Lee High School in Jack
sonville, Fla., his birthplace,
and continued his education at
the University of West Florida,
where he received his
teacher’s professional certifi
cation. Dusty received both his
associate’s and bachelor’s de
grees at the University of
Florida (GATOR NATION!)
Dusty was an honored
Eagle Scout and joined the
United States Air Force, where
he was a graduate of the USA
Parachute School, USAF air
command and staff, and be
came a command pilot. Dusty
was a life member of the Re
tired Officer’s Association and
served the country in World
War II. After his military career
Dusty was a retired teacher at
Ruckel Junior High School in
Niceville, Fla.
He was preceded in death
by his beloved wife, Opal
Watkins Rhodes, and sisters
Bessie Angie “Becky” Rhodes
and Claude Ann Henderson.
He is survived by his
brother, Robert Lang Rhodes;
nieces Adrianne Moore, Robin
Lang Brown and Jane Rhodes
Waldman; nephew, Russell
Robert Rhodes; and his dear
est of friends Gayle and Joe
Williams.
The family would like to rec
ognize the special care in his
final days given by Drs. Indu-
mathi Christopher and J. John
son at North Okaloosa Medical
Center, Dr. Sneed, family med
icine residency of the 96th
medical group at Eglin Air
Force Base, and the staff of
Belvedere Commons and
Shoal Creek Rehabilitation
Center.
Dusty committed his life to
the service of others and this
life will be void without him.
In lieu of flowers the family
has requested donations to the
Fisher House at Eglin Air
Force Base.
A funeral service will be held
at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 17,
at Emerald Coast Funeral
Home. Family will receive
friends one hour prior to the
service for visitation. Interment
will be held at Barrancas Na
tional Cemetery in Pensacola,
Fla., at 1:15 p.m.

Ellen Hodge Peeples
PEEPLES — Ellen Hodge
Peeples, 90, of Kingsland,
passed away early Saturday
morning, July 13, 2013, at the
Senior Care Center of St.
Marys.
Mrs. Peeples was born on
Oct. 17, 1922, in Empire, Ga.
She is the daughter of the late
Elijah T. Hodge Sr. and Emma
Rowland Hodge. She married
Clifford A. Peeples on July 15,
1941, in Charlton County, and
they shared 40 years of life and
love together until his passing
in 1981.
Mrs. Peeples was most
known for her doughnuts when
she owned and operated The
Donut Shop in downtown
Kingsland for many years.
Later, Mrs. Peeples worked as
an associate in the deli section
at Winn-Dixie in Kingsland.
She was avid about garden
ing, both with flowers and
growing vegetables, and loved
keeping her lawn and flowers
in pristine condition. She loved
to work puzzles, crosswords
and other mentally challenging
games, but her greatest pas
sion was spending time with
her family. Mrs. Peeples valued
her fellowship with other broth
ers and sisters in Christ at
Browntown Baptist Church.
She will be missed by both
family and friends alike.
Mrs. Peeples is survived by
her grandchildren, Harold “Hal”
Lee Peeples and his wife,
Rhonda, Beth Peeples and her
companion, Amanda Newman,
and Vincent Rogers and his
wife, April, all of Kingsland;
Rhonda R. Yarbrough Combs
of Folkston, and David Barrett
Yarbrough and Phillip Adam
Yarbrough of Kingsland;
daughter-in-law, Deborah
Peeples, and son-in-law,
Ernest Rogers, both of Kings
land; great-grandchildren,
Kacey, Owen and Evan
Peeples, Lindsey Yarbrough
and Bailey and Ryan Rogers;
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Besides her parents, Mrs.
Peeples joins her husband,
Clifford A. Peeples, her daugh
ter, Wanda Jeanette Peeples
Rogers, and her son, Clifford
Harold Peeples, in Heaven.
Calling hours for the Peeples
family were from 6 to 8 p.m.
Monday, July 15, at Coastal
Camden Funeral Home in
Kingsland. Funeral services
were held graveside at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, July 16, in Lawnwood
Cemetery in Kingsland, with
Brother Gary Potter presiding.
In recognition for the special
care given to Mrs. Peeples, the
family requests any memorial
contributions be made to Hos
pice of the Golden Isles in
Brunswick, or the Senior Care
Center in St. Marys.

Peeples’ arrangements.
HOWELL — Herbert A.
Howell, 88, of St. Marys,
passed away Friday, July 12,
2013, at the Senior Care Cen
ter in St. Marys.
Born Jan. 31,1925, he was
the son of the late Henry and
Della Walker Howell. In addi
tion to his parents, he was
also preceded in death by his
brother, Emmett Howell.
Mr. Howell was retired from
Gilman Paper Company with
37 years of service. He was
an avid golfer, having been a
member of the St. Marys Golf
and Country Club for many
years. He loved hunting, fish
ing and wood crafting. He was
a member of the St. Marys
United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Camay Howell of St. Marys;
daughter, Karen Denise
Chandler (Joe) of Spartan
burg, S.C.; sister, Helen Lynn
of Alexandria, Va.; three
grandchildren, Elese Dowling,
Nicole Chandler, and Chris
Chandler.
Memorial services were
held at 2 p.m. Monday, July
15, 2013, at Allison Memorial
Chapel in St. Marys with Pas
tor Dale Thornton and Chap
lain Pat McCord officiating.
The family received friends
following the services.

PHILLIPS — Cavin R.
Phillips, 48, of St. Marys, died
Monday, July 15, 2013, at his
residence. Services and a
complete list of survivors will
be announced later by Allison
Memorial Chapel of St.
Marys.
