Camden County Fire
Rescue firefighters re
sponded to one of their own
stations Sunday after the
county’s search and rescue
vehicle caught fire.
According to fire chief
Dennis Gailey, the blaze oc
curred just before 8 a.m.
July 28 at Station 19 on
Dover Bluff Road. A fire
fighter had just returned
from driving the tractor-
trailer style truck when he
spotted smoke at the rear of
the trailer.
After exiting the vehicle
to take a closer look, the
firefighter discovered more
smoke and flames coming
from beneath the trailer’s
rear axle. Because Engine
19, the fire engine assigned
to the station, was on an
emergency call at the time,
the firefighter alerted 911
dispatchers, who then sent
an additional unit at about
8:06 a.m., Gailey said.
Though owned by the
county, the search and res
cue vehicle is designed to
respond as part of the Geor-

it will be salvageable.

(GSAR) Coastal Task Force,
which is composed of fire
fighters throughout the re
gion but led by Camden
County Fire Rescue and Sa
vannah Fire and Emergency
Services.
Camden County also
owns the equipment on
board the truck, some of
which was lost in the fire.
Gailey said the department
is in the process of notifying
the county’s vehicle insur
ance company and perform
ing an inventory of the
equipment to identify the
losses.
“At this time, we have not
been able to determine the
cause of the fire, therefore it
would be premature to as
sign who will be responsible
for the losses,” Gailey said.
“As the situation progresses,
the insurance company will
have a better idea of the
amount of the loss.”
When asked if the vehicle
is a total loss, Gailey said
that determination will be
made by the county’s insur
ance adjustor in the coming
days.
“With the trailer’s module
design, we hope it will be
salvageable,” he said. “We
were able to recover more
than half of the equipment
that was on the truck itself.”
Gailey said the state
GSAR coordinator has been
notified of the incident and
resources from other teams
in various departments
across the state will provide
coverage in the county’s re
sponse gaps during the tem
porary loss of the vehicle
and its equipment.
GSAR’s overall mission is
to serve and respond to re
gions during incidents
where rescue resources are
needed, usually activated
under a declaration by the
governor for large events
and through area fire chiefs
in mutual aid scenarios for
smaller incidents.
