Brooks County in shutouts

The first tournament last
weekend was a mix for the
Camden County softball
Lady ’Cats with two shutout
wins bookending three de
feats — two of them by one
run — at the Softball in the
Swamp tussle in Waycross.
Caitlin Annunziata had 12
hits over the five games for
CCHS, including a pair of
home runs in a 9-0 closing
rout of Brunswick. Camden
also scored early and often in
a 12-0 opening blowout of
Brooks County, lost narrow
7-6 and 4-3 verdicts to
Athens Christian, and fell 8-4
to Brantley County.
“We had a lot of kids taking
good swings,” CCHS head
coach Victor Smith said.
On Saturday, Annunziata
tormented Brunswick, going
4-for-4 with the two round-
trippers, three runs scored
and four RBIs. Kailey Kinzly
was a perfect 3-for-3 with a
double and run scored, and
freshman Brogan Boudreaux
3-for-4 with two steals and
two runs scored. Kimber
Lewis smacked two hits,
scored a run, and drove in
another.
Cori Boeck, Hannah Clark
and Valerie Applebee all had
hits for the winners, and
Jesse Cheek pitched four in
nings and struck out two.
Sam Zwick scored a run as
did freshman Kaitlyn Kilner,
who struck out one in an in
ning of work.
Camden scored in every
inning Friday in bashing
Brooks, including a four-run
first and a three-run fifth.
Annunziata doubled,
scored twice and had an RBI
in a 3-for-3 effort, while
Kinzly (three runs scored)
and Lewis (two runs scored)
each slapped two hits and
knocked in a run. Boeck
produced two hits and two
runs scored, and Aubry
Horne drove in a run and
pitched five innings, with
four hits allowed and five
whiffs. Boudreaux, Zwick
and Madison Butler all
scored runs.
Athens Christian nipped
Camden at the wire twice,
the first a 7-6 result Friday
in which Boudreaux doubled
twice and scored a run, and
Lewis was 1 -for-2 with two
runs scored. Annunziata hit
safely and scored, Horne
and Tristin Lanham scored a
run apiece, and Boeck
fanned four and walked two
in seven innings.
In Saturday’s second
meeting between the
schools, five Lady ’Cats had
multi-hit performances,
with Lewis (two steals and a
double) and Boeck (a triple
and RBI) both going 2-for-
4. Applebee and Annunziata
were both 2-for-3 with a run
scored, and Clark 2-for-3.
Applebee struck out seven
and permitted five hits in
seven innings.
Also Saturday, Brantley
scored three runs in each of
the first two innings to hold
off CCHS, which got two
hits and two runs scored
from Annunziata.
Horne and Kinzly tallied a
run apiece, Boeck con
tributed a hit and steal, and
Butler and Applebee hit
safely. Horne fired six in
nings and struck out two,
and Kilner fanned one in
one frame of work.
Camden has a bit of a
break in the schedule, with
Valdosta the next opponent
Aug. 24 in Kingsland.

Late touchdown means tie
for middle-school gridders

Normally rivals, Camden

united in a gridiron scrim

a late touchdown pass to sal

Three local wrestlers getting opportunities on college mats
Andy Diffenderfer
sports@tribune-georgian.com
Wrestling in college was a
common goal for former Cam
den County High School mat
standouts Alex Washington, A.J.
Walthour and Niko Kolgaklis,
and all three will get a chance.
A series of signings is sending
Washington to Darton State
College in Albany; Kolgaklis to
Cumberland University in
Lebanon, Tenn., near Nashville;
and Walthour to Brewton-
Parker College.
All three finished in the top
four of their weight classes at the
last Class AAAAAA state tradi
tional meet.
Walthour, who wrestled at
140 pounds as a freshman,
notched third-place state fin
ishes at 160 and 170 the last two
years. Kolgaklis, who began at
119 as a ninth-grader, was third
in the state at 152, and Washing
ton was fourth at 285.
At Cumberland, Kolgaklis
said “the guys made me feel like
I was part of the team,” and the
soon-to-be Bulldog is looking
potentially to major in business
management. A good fit with
the coaching staff at Darton was
a big plus for Washington, and
for Walthour, Brewton-Parker is
a good school for a possible
major in biology
While the Camden program
is structured similarly to a col
lege program, “it’s going to be a
transition” for the three, said
CCHS head coach Jess Wilder,
noting Walthour’s potential,
Washington’s improvement and
Kolgaklis’ perseverance.
Walthour knows college op
ponents will be technically
sound, and all three understand
the intensity will be ratcheted up
a few notches. The next step up
is a big one, one Kolgaklis
equated to going from youth to
varsity wrestling.
Mental toughness and matu
rity, according to the wrestlers,
are among the many traits they
learned during their time at
Camden.
Walthour said his biggest im
provements with the ’Cats came
on offense, learning to go after
every point. For Washington,
lessons of never giving up were
ones that stuck.
The trio also learned during
their time at CCHS that im
provement in one wrestler
meant the Wildcats getting bet
ter as a program.
“We’re not individuals,” Kol
gaklis said. “We’re all one team.
We look out for each other.”
