The Camden County
Wildcats have enjoyed many
a happy moment in the
Georgia Dome, with great
victories and state champi
onships. Last Saturday night
at the Corky Kell Classic
won’t be one for the high
light reel, however.
Outgained by more than
150 yards and guilty of 10
penalties, the Wildcats scuf
fled through a 34-14 open
ing setback to a relentlessly
balanced North Gwinnett
side in Atlanta.
“I thought we would per
form better than we did,”
CCHS head coach Welton
Coffey said. “We started off
well but did not finish well.”
With more evaluation in
store, “we have to be a little
more consistent,” he said. “If
we do that, we’ll be fine.”
All of Camden’s 222 yards
came on the ground, while
North Gwinnett — led by
quarterback Hayden Sphire,
running back C.J. Leggett,
and receivers Nate Brown
and Caleb Scott — had
nearly equal rushing and
throwing totals in a 379-yard
performance.
Harrison Poole was a
bright spot for the Wildcats,
taking his first carry 60 yards
for a touchdown and finish
ing with a team-best 127
yards on 12 attempts. Anto
nio Wimbush carried nine
times for 61 yards and a first-
quarter touchdown that
briefly put CCHS ahead.
Sphire expertly conducted
the Bulldogs’ spread attack,
interceptions by Demitri
Saulsberry and Darryle Isreal
the only smudges on his 16-
of-24, 194-yard, three-
touchdown scorecard.
Brown had two touchdown
catches and Scott another as
three North Gwinnett re
ceivers grabbed at least 48
yards’ worth of passes, and
the prized senior recruit
Leggett ran 21 times for 138
of the winners’ 185 rushing
yards.
The Bulldogs enjoyed out
standing field position
throughout the night, begin
ning eight of their 13 posses
sions at their own 40-yard
line or beyond. By halftime,
North Gwinnett had 14 first
downs and 254 total yards,
and Leggett had already sur
passed the century mark on
the ground.
North Gwinnett answered
Camden’s first touchdown
with two end zone visits, and
after Poole’s quick strike kept
CCHS quiet for the game’s
final 35 minutes.
Saulsberry had one of the
Wildcats’ three takeaways, a
first-quarter pick that ended
a promising march and led to
the night’s first touchdown.
Camden needed just four
plays to travel the remaining
64 yards, Wimbush gallop
ing the final 37 with 8:17 re
maining in the first.
