Look no further for a Bible study
L ittle did I know how
important that one
invitation would be!
When my lovely neighbor
invited me to attend a Bible
study with her in 1981, my
life was fairly uncomplicated.
A young married wife, I did
n’t have children yet, or a
dog. My biggest concern was
working part time to help
pay on our first mortgage.
Yet, when Sheryl invited
me to attend Bible Study
Fellowship, I was leery of the
commute. You see, we lived
on an island back then,
across Puget Sound from
Seattle. So, we had to drive
to the ferry dock, wait for the
next ferry to unload and re
load, sit for the 30 minute
ride and then drive almost 30
minutes to the church that
hosted the BSF class. To my
surprise, however, it made
for a delightful day. I really
enjoyed being with her and
getting familiar with the
Bible.
That first class established
a lifeline for me, a tether to
God’s word that has given
me hope in dark times and
joy in the face of loss. Dis
covering God’s love and al-

lowing his principles to
shape my thinking has
proven to be the greatest
gift.
Though I didn’t attend
classes each of the last 32
years, I’ve been able to par
ticipate in many of them. I’ve
been blessed to attend not
only in Washington state,
but also in central Texas and
in central Florida.
Currently, I participate in
a Jacksonville, Fla., class,
commuting with precious
ladies from Camden County
each Thursday.
Bible Study Fellowship
classes are interdenomina
tional and international, wel
coming to everyone. Offered
in 38 countries, they meet
weekly and follow the school
calendar, so we have holidays
and summer vacation off.
You might be wondering,
what makes it worth the
commute?
BSF was started by a mis
sionary woman with a pas
sion for personal Bible study.
A.W. Johnson developed a
four-fold approach which in
cludes: daily questions for
personal study, small discus
sion groups where partici
pants learn from each other,
expository lectures with ap
plications for daily living,
and printed notes on the pas
sage just studied.
In essence, each week stu
dents interact with a passage
of scripture four different
ways. Now, that’s getting to
know the word!
In general, BSF concen
trates on one book of the
Bible at a time. This year we
are studying the Book of
Matthew. Imagine the privi
lege of taking 30 weeks to
concentrate on this one
gospel account.
I’m so looking forward to
delving into Christ’s para
bles, the Lord’s Prayer and
the events of Jesus’ life as
recorded by the Apostle
Matthew.
And I have no doubt this
study will benefit seasoned
Bible students, new believ
ers, and skeptics alike.
Would you like to join us?
Starting next week, there are
morning classes on Wednes
days and Thursdays, both in
cluding a program for
children (infants to age 5).
We have several car pools
leaving at 8 a.m., returning
by 12:30 p.m. For those who
attend on Thursdays, there’s
the option of stopping in
River City for lunch and
shopping as well.
Feel free to call me at (912)
882-7008 for more informa
tion and check out www.bsf-
international.org.
I pray for the day that we
will be able to host an
evening BSF class here in
Camden County.
Until then, the commute is
sweet.
Jessica Errico lives in Camden
County with her husband of 35
