Focal therapist Dr. Carlene Tay
lor remembers a client, a young
girl, who had suffered significant
trauma. She wouldn’t open up in
traditional therapy. Then she vis
ited a barnyard full of animals.
“The animals made her feel
safer,” Taylor recalls. The animals
allowed the girl to relax and feel
secure without the pressures of
communicating with therapists.
She was able to start talking about
what she was going through.
“They accept her as she is,” Tay
lor said of the animals. “Many
times when she’s struggling, she’ll
just come to the barn.”
Now Taylor, executive director
of FightHorse Healthcare Inc., is
teaming up with Beau’s Barnyard,
a petting zoo style business in
Kingsland, to provide more of this
type of therapy.
FightHorse Healthcare Inc. is a
nonprofit behavioral health clinic
that uses in-office as well as expe

teens, adults, families and groups.
Beau’s will be the setting for ani
mal therapy programs, providing
an environment that allows more
opportunities for patients who may
feel trapped, nervous or anxious in
a doctor’s office to open up.
