40-yard pass from Dalton
Sikes — but after rolling up
203 yards in the opening pe
riod, struggled to regain of
fensive traction.
After Wimbush’s 3 -yard
TD run late in the opening
stanza put Hillgrove in a 21-
7 bind, the Hawks didn’t
blink, assuming control with
27 unanswered points. Rely
ing mostly on a short passing
game, Ironside was a crisp
12-for-20 throwing for 200
yards and two touchdowns,
and Bagley dodged ’Cat
clutches for 138 yards rush
ing and a score on 2 7 totes.
Down 14 early in the sec
ond period, the Hawks
soared back into the game
with Ironside the catalyst,
the senior passer striking
gold on third-and-24 and
connecting with Emmanual
Beal on a stunning 72-yard
touchdown that completely
switched momentum.
A 6 3-yard Wimbush kick
off return put the Wildcats
in prime position to answer,
but they were unable to cap
italize on a red-zone oppor
tunity thanks to two
penalties and a sack.
On the next Camden pos
session, a punt turned to dis
aster as Denton weaved
through tacklers on an 82-
yard touchdown return.
CCHS still had the lead, 21-
20, after blocking the extra
point with 2:59 left in the
half, but wouldn’t be ahead
much longer. On the next se
ries, a Quincey Nelson inter
ception set up the Hawks at
the Camden 24, and six plays

later, Ironside found a
tightroping Denton on an 8-
yard score with 20 seconds
remaining.
The only points of the sec
ond half came on the very
first possession, a Hillgrove
series that started near mid-
field. Ironside hit Richard
Hallman for 15 yards to es
cape a third-and-5, and the
Hawks turned to trickery on
the next snap as Sonny Har
ris found a lonesome Omar
Black on a 17-yard halfback
option throw for a score.
Camden’s last serious
threat started early in the
fourth quarter, after a punt
pinned the ’Cats inches out
side their goal line. Burrow
ing out of trouble, CCHS
negotiated six third-down
conversions and marched 22
plays and 90 yards — only to
be stopped just shy on fourth
down at the Hillgrove 9 with
3:44 remaining.
The night certainly started
promisingly for the Wild
cats, who scored on three
straight first-quarter posses
sions.
Sikes — who completed
five of 14 passes for 57 yards
— found an open Bessent
well behind the secondary
to kick off the scoring.
Bagley’s 1-yard plunge
punctuated a 64-yard, 62-
second Hawk response, but
Poole’s 6-yard gallop
around the right side — set
up by a 3 7-yard Johnson
carry — put CCHS back
ahead.
Camden added to the lead
after a sack of Ironside pro
duced a fumble. Five plays
and 15 yards later, Wim
bush’s run boosted the ad
vantage to 14.
Meeting with the team in
the center of the field after
ward, Coffey urged his
Wildcats to never be satis
fied, and lauded the work of
his seniors. In a 10-2 re
gion-title season that in
cluded hard-nosed triumphs
over Colquitt, Lowndes and
Valdosta, his underclassmen
also learned about the effort
necessary to win in Geor
gia’s biggest classification.
“Our work is not done,”
said Coffey, commending
his players for their deter
mination throughout the
year and vowing a strong
return in 2014.
“It’s been a test each and
every week,” he said.

small second-quarter lull,
resumed full-court attack

The Hornets had three in
double figures, with Connor
Wetmore’s 12 points, Ty
Wilson’s 11 and Hunter
Gordon’s 10. Ryan Thomas
contributed eight points.
Dom Jones snatched five
rebounds and scored all
eight of his points in the sec
ond half for the ’Cats, who
inflated a 31-23 halftime
edge to a lopsided 52-34 en

Kevin McKenzie added
seven points for Camden,
Jonathan Canada five assists

Up eight at the break,
CCHS got 18 of its 21
third-quarter points from
the combination of Daniel

and Street (eight points and
a trey). A Daniel putback
midway through the final
period gave Camden its
biggest lead, 67-38, midway
through the fourth.
“Overall, I’m pleased, first
