Theater to perform ‘Sweetgrass’ play
In tribute to Black His
tory Month, St. Marys Lit
tle Theatre (SMLT) will
present the original musical
drama “Sweetgrass” Fri
day, Feb. 24, through Sun
day, Feb. 26, at Theatre by
the Trax in downtown St.
Marys.
“Sweetgrass” depicts the
life of the Gullah Geechee
people through song and
dance with two 7 p.m. per
formances featuring the re
nowned McIntosh Shouters.
According to the play’s
writer, Gaila Brandon,
“Sweetgrass” presents the
opportunity for an audience
to explore the Gullah and
African history and get a
glimpse into their culture of
today.
Brandon said, “After los
ing her parents in a tragic
accident when she was a
teenager, a young woman
living in New York inher
its her great aunt’s heirs’
property on Sapelo Island.
She soon discovers a part of
her past that she had long
forgotten and a part of her
culture that is embodied in
the spirituality of her Gullah
Geechee heritage.”
“As the story unfolds,
audiences will witness the
transformation of the girl’s
life and her discovery of a
new sense of place but, most
importantly, they will be
immersed in a heart-touch
ing experience that connects
them to a culture rich in
history and grace,” said Bar
bara Ryan, SMLT chair and
director of “Sweetgrass.”
At 7 p.m. Friday and
Saturday, the McIntosh
Shouters will join the SMLT
ensemble on stage with one
of their performances that
has earned them numerous
national awards. Recently,
by special invitation, they
performed at the grand
opening of the new National
Museum of African-Ameri
can History and Culture in
Washington, D.C.
While the McIntosh
County Shouters have been
performing in public since
1980, they have been prac
ticing the ring shout since
the 18th century. This age-
old tradition has been passed
down from generation to
generation in their families
since their ancestors arrived
in bondage more than 300
years ago.
“Sweetgrass” is SMLT’s
fifth annual tribute pro
duction for Black History
Month and the fourth one
written by Brandon.
Performances of “Sweet
grass” are set for 7 p.m. Feb.
24, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Feb. 25
and 2 p.m. Feb. 26.

Flu shots available
The Camden County
Health Department now
has flu vaccine available.
The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention is
only recommending inject
able flu vaccines this sea
son.
The health department
offers flu shots for $29 and
high dose flu shots, made to
better protect those 65 and
older, for $50. Getting the
flu vaccine is considered the
best way to protect oneself,
one’s family and the com
munity from the flu.
Getting vaccinated
against the flu is recom
mended for everyone 6
months of age and older. It
takes about two weeks after
getting a flu shot for the
vaccine to provide the body
protection against the flu.
While getting the flu vac
cine is the best way to pre
vent the flu, there are other
things we can all do every
day to prevent getting or
spreading the flu:
• Avoid close contact
with sick people.
• If you get sick with
flu-like illness, stay home
for at least 24 hours after
the fever is gone except
to get medical care or for
other necessities. The fever
should be gone without
the use of a fever-reducing
medicine.
• While sick, limit con
tact with others as much as
possible to keep from in
fecting them.
