Submarine Group 10 gains new commanding officer
I could see the great dedication and professionalism
as soon as I arrived, that has earned this waterfront
one of the top reputations.
Rear Adm. Michael Holland, Sub Group 10 CO
Commander, Submarine
Group 10 held a change-of-
command ceremony Sept. 7
at Kings Bay Naval Subma
rine Base.
Rear Adm. Randy Crites
was relieved by Rear Adm.
Michael Holland as the
Submarine Group 10 com
mander. Vice Adm. Joseph
Tofalo, commander, Sub
marine Forces, was the guest
speaker for the ceremony
and commended Crites and
his team for their outstand
ing performance.
“Under your leadership
over the past two years, your
team has been responsible
for eight of the most capa
ble and most powerful naval
platforms the world has ever
known,” said Tofalo. “Stra
tegic deterrence has argu
ably prevented major power
war for over 70 years, and
you and the entire Kings Bay
team make that happen.”
Crites, a native of Lima,
Ohio, was awarded the Le
gion of Merit during the
ceremony and credited the
personnel at Kings Bay for
his successful tour as Group
10’s commander.
“As a commander, I’ve
been blessed with an amaz
ing team, not just my staff
here at Group 10, but across
the various commands on
this critically important
base,” said Crites. “The col
lective team at Kings Bay
has performed at a remark
able level and was frequently
recognized by outside orga
nizations and Navy senior
leadership for their sustained
superior performance.”
Crites commanded Group
10 for more than two years
and said Holland will be in
heriting one the best teams
he’s worked with throughout
his career.
“Our submarines are
mission ready, our crews
are trained and ready — I
couldn’t be prouder of the
men and women assigned
here,” said Crites.
Crites leaves the southern
Georgia coast to move to
Washington, D.C., taking
his position as director of the
assessment division in the
Office of the Chief of Naval
Operations.
Holland, a native of Great
Falls, Mont., previously
served as the director of
maritime headquarters on
the staff of Commander,
U.S. Pacific Fleet. He be
comes the 17th commander
of Group 10, which exercises
administrative control over
Submarine Squadron 16 and
20 and their assigned ballis
tic and guided-cruise missile
submarines.
“I could see the great ded
ication and professionalism
as soon as I arrived, that has
earned this waterfront one
of the top reputations,” said
Holland. “I’m incredibly ex
cited to take over this posi
tion and start working with
the Kings Bay team.”

Sherry Elizabeth Ballard
BALLARD - Ms. Sherry
Elizabeth Ballard, 48, of St.
Marys passed away the morn
ing of Monday, Sept. 4, 2017,
at Southeast Georgia Health
System in Brunswick.
Ms. Ballard was born in
Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 29,
1969, to Charlene Brown. Her
family shared: Sherry was a
well-known and loved person
in the community. Everywhere
she went, even if it was out of
town, she knew somebody.
She was known for her gener
osity and heart.
One of her favorite things
to do was arts and crafts and
decorating. In addition, she
loved watching her sons play
sports. Her three sons were
her life and she would always
enjoy telling friends about
them. She worked at The Sal
vation Army for many years,
where she would become ac
quainted with the community.
Her fiance Mitch Quinn
added: “Sherry was the most
unique person I knew and was
truly beautiful inside and out.
She was a shining star that
dimmed out too soon. Around
Camden County, Jacksonville
and Brunswick, she would al
ways run into someone she
knew. She was very happy to
see them. Sherry seemed to
be liked by so many people.
“Sherry is in a much bet
ter place now. No more pain,
medication, treatments and
surgeries. The 16 years we
were together were some of
the happiest times of my life.
That time passed way too
quickly. As Lord Alfred Tenny
son wrote, ‘Tis better to have
loved and lost than never
to have loved at all.’ I would
never have traded our love for
anything in this world. Rest my
beauty.”
She will be greatly missed
by those who knew and loved
her.
