Camden’s Davis highlights
NFL’s first week of games
Hurricane Irma sent my
wife and I retreating to Ten
nessee. Chances are when
the TV wasn’t glued to The
Weather Channel, it was
college football or the NFL
as a replacement.
With a regionalized touch,
here are a few nuggets from
the pros’ first weekend.
Jarrad Davis picked up
where his productive ten
ure as a Florida Gator left
off. The former Wildcat
linebacker, among the more
well-received first-round se
lections by draft experts, was
a featured performer as the
Detroit Lions beat Arizona.
Two months shy of his
22nd birthday, the No. 21
overall selection impressed
in his debut. His fumble re
covery was one of four De
troit takeaways — and led
to a score — and he had a
team-high nine tackles in
the 35-23 triumph.
After tormenting veteran
Cardinal passer Carson
Palmer, Davis and his new
teammates will have their
hands full with elite quar
terbacks over the next seven
weeks: Eli Manning, Matt
Ryan, Cam Newton, Drew
Brees, Ben Roethlisberger
and Aaron Rodgers.
Could the Jaguars’ 29-7
win at AFC South rival
Houston be the start of a
long-awaited turnaround? I
wrote a few weeks ago their
most important offseason
acquisition was welcoming
back Tom Coughlin in an
executive capacity. And at
least for now, they’re unde
feated and leading the divi
sion.
The winners took ad
vantage of a porous Texan
offensive line for 10 sacks
— four by newcomer Calais
Campbell — to win easily,
though the season-ending
injury to receiver Allen
Robinson took some shine
off the day’s events.
Perhaps the best part
of Sunday’s romp is that
Jacksonville needed erratic
quarterback Blake Bortles
to only stay out of the way.
First-round pick Leon
ard Fournette, who a few
weeks ago suggested the
NFL was a lot slower than
he first thought, rushed for
100 yards on 26 carries and
caught three passes.
Coastal
Pines sets
fundraiser
Coastal Pines Technical
College Foundation trustees
and volunteers are working
on the annual golf tourna
ment to be held Friday, Oct.
20, at the Okefenokee Coun
try Club. This event plays a
major role in raising funds
for the college’s toolbox
scholarships. Many scholar
ships are awarded each year
due to the proceeds from
this event.
The golf fundraiser will
feature teams in a four-
player scramble format.
Sponsorships are available.
Entry fees for the tourney
are $500 for a sponsored
team and $100 for a player.
The fees include a golf cart
and green fees, lunch, a
snack/swag bag, a chance
to win door prizes and a tee
gift.
Participants can register
and pay at http://cptcfounda-
tion.com/golf-tournament/.

Maybe I’m making too
much out of one win. The
Jags have plenty of time to
slip into some old, unhappy
habits.
However, in what’s shap
ing up to be the NFL’s worst
division again, the chance is
there for Coughlin, Camp
bell and company to move
up, even without Robinson.
Houston has quarterback
questions, Indianapolis got
torched by the lousy Rams,
and Tennessee succumbed
at home to Oakland.
How long the Falcons’
$uper Bowl hangover lin
gers is anyone’s guess. A
first-week assignment at
Chicago appeared to be
a mismatch, yet Atlanta
needed a defensive stand in
the final seconds to escape,
23-17.
Ryan, the reigning Most
Valuable Player, overcame a
dormant running game and
threw for more than 300
yards. While Julio Jones’
catches often fill highlight
reels, tight end Austin
Hooper’s savage stiff-arm
on an 88-yard touchdown
reception begs YouTube at
tention.
But with the clock wind
ing down, the upset-minded
Bears had first down from
the Atlanta 5. Three incom
pletions and a sack later, the
Falcons could breathe again.
In a sense, it’s debut sea
son in Atlanta, too.
New offensive coordina
tor $teve $arkisian is mak
ing the jump from Alabama.
New defensive coordinator
Marquand Manuel has been
promoted from secondary
coach. A new stadium is
turning heads.
Few conference champi
ons undergo such distinct
staff changes from one sea
son to the next. It’s funny
what a bitter $uper Bowl
aftertaste will do.
