Region Report
Regional play continues for Region 3, the region that Jenkins County is part of. Last week
featured matchups of ECI vs Jenkins County and Portal vs McIntosh County. Leading up to
regional play starting, McIntosh County Academy (MCA) and ECI were the top two teams.
MCA had a rough start facing ECI three times and losing all three. Last week, they faced
Portal in three games and got back on the winning side taking two out of the three games.
ECI remained on top of the standings facing Jenkins County in three games and winning all
three matchups.
In the week ahead, Jenkins County will play three against Portal, and McIntosh County
Academy will play three against Montgomery County. ECI will play two non-regional op
ponents at home against Toombs County and on the road to Savannah Country Day.
The War Eagles are deep into their regional schedule, having only three more series left
to finish out the season. They will play Portal, Montgomery County, and McIntosh County
before the season ends and all will be three-game series. The fight for regional position is
now on as every game in the region matters! The top four from every region advance to the
state playoffs.
Friday was a tough day for the War Eagles as they played ECI in a doubleheader in Twin
City. Earlier in the week the War Eagles fell 12-6. The first game had Jackson Lanier on
the mound for the War Eagles. The game remained scoreless through the 2 Vi innings, then
ECI got their bats going strong. They were able to put across four runs in the third inning
followed by six more in the fifth. The War Eagles finally got their lone hit in the game in the
fifth inning with a single by James Allen. The game ended in 5 innings. Kearson, who was
on the mound for ECI struck out ten and had zero walks giving up that lone hit.
In the second game of the doubleheaders, Reid Weathersby went to the mound for the War
Eagles. This time, it was the third inning before the War Eagles got the bats going, but in the
third, they would put up two runs. It all began with a Jackson Lanier single, followed by a
double by Gauge Oglesby that would score Lanier. This would be followed by a single by
Tyler Williams that would bring Oglesby home.
Unfortunately, the bats of ECI would also get going. The Bulldogs put across 6 runs in the
third to take a 6-2 lead. The War Eagles would gain some hits through the rest of the game,
but they would not get on the scoreboard again until the seventh inning. In the top of the
7th with one out and no one on base, Gavin Underwood, who signed to play college ball
earlier in the day, hit a fly ball to center field that found its way over the wall. This was his
4th home run of the season. The War Eagles did outhit ECI in the game eight to seven, but
they were not able to get the runs across the plate. The final score was ECI 6 and the War
Eagles 3.

Opening Day

The day has finally arrived, and the countdown is finally over. In the last four
weeks, new rules have been explained and my predictions for the new season have
been given. Opening Day rosters have been announced, and the starters for all 15
games held on Thursday have been announced.
The Atlanta Braves have named Max Fried their opening-day starter. This is his
second year straight being the starter for the Braves. Rosters were shaken up and
so were fans last week when Orlando Arcia was named the opening-day starter at
shortstop. Many had that spot filled by Vaughn Grissom or Braden Shewamke. Both
of those players went to Triple-A. There are a few minor injuries, but nothing of
great concern to Braves fans with 162 games to be played.
As promised in last week’s edition, my World Series projections. Even though I
am a little biased toward the Atlanta Braves, in all honesty looking at the numbers,
I believe the Atlanta Braves will beat out the San Diego Padres in seven games to
win the National League. In the American League, Houston will play in their third
straight World Series defeating the Seattle Mariners in five games. In the end, there
will be a parade in Atlanta for the second time in three years as Atlanta will defeat
Houston in six games. At the end of the season, if this holds up, remember where
you read it first!
My “dark horse” projection for the year will be the Pirates in the National League
and the Orioles in the American League. Neither team will make the playoffs, but
they will shock some teams this season and will come close to a wildcard spot and
may even take one of the spots. If I were a betting man though, I would not bet on
my projections.
Throughout the MLB season, updates will be given for the Atlanta Braves and
throughout the MLB. At the All-Star break, which is around the halfway point of
the season, I will revisit the predictions and see if it is all holding up. Remember
baseball fans, the season is a marathon (162 games), not a sprint. Atlanta has not
won opening day since 2018 and in 2021 they had a losing record at the All-Star
break and still won the World Series.
