Under the
Bleachers
The time has finally
arrived sports lovers, we
can emerge from our long
summer nap and out from
under the bleachers into
the wonderful world of
fall sports. High School
football and softball have
made their reemergence
and started the new
season. Cross County will
start soon! College and
professional football will
be starting soon. For those
of us who are sports lovers,
this is paradise!
However, as the players
show up on the field, let
me remind you to show
up in the bleachers.There
is nothing better for a high
school athlete to have the
stands full and noise being
made by their fans. Stand
with your team, winning or
losing.
In addition, as we all head
to the bleachers for all
these big games coming
up, let us remember to be
careful what we say on the
bleachers and under the
bleachers. It is easy to be
a coach from the bleachers,
but let us remember the
coaches know their teams!
Let us not be so quick to
offer criticism and seek
to offer encouragement.
Also, remember these kids
are teenagers. If you are
watching college sports
they are still student-
athletes and in their early
20s. Do not let the actions
of students cause you to
say things that should not
be said. We will leave that
at just that this week!
This week’s Under the
Bleachers is short. Enjoy
the sports articles about
the winning success of
your War Eagle football
and softball teams! Get
ready for the games this
week and get out and cheer
them on. Do not forget the
MLB Season is still going
strong. For those of us who
are Atlanta Braves fans, we
are enjoying an amazing
season; hopefully, they
will still be playing until
the end of October and into
November (World Series).
Until playoffs, we will
continue to enjoy the best
team in MLB!
Softball Starts Off Hot
On Friday, the Jenkins County War Eagles Softball team
traveled to Grovetown for two games in an early season
tournament. The War Eagles were scheduled to face off against
both Lincoln County and Oglethorpe County. The War Eagles
defeated Lincoln County during the 2022/2023 season, and this
year they would come out on top again.
Lincoln County started the game out on top scoring one run
in the top of the first. Mya Abraham was the first runner for the
War Eagles, reaching by way of a walk, and then Laura Gayle
Dailey would reach by error. Abraham was able to advance to
third on a steal, and Shanya Lake did what she needed to do
grounding into an out but that allowed Abraham to score. After
1 inning the score was tied 1 -1.
After a 3 up 3 down thrown by Katie Bell, the War Eagles
would take a 2-1 lead as Ava Brantley scored on a passed ball.
Unfortunately, the lead was taken back by Lincoln County
and they would score in the top of the third. In the 4 th inning,
Lake hit a double scoring Abraham. In the next at-bat, a hit by
Jakhaila Oglesby would drive a run in. From that point forward,
the War Eagles sustained the lead and won the game 6-3.
The Lady War Eagles had 5 hits during the game. Jakhaila
Ogelsby, Ava Brantley, Loghan Walker, Shayna Lake, and
Kynlee Wallace each had 1 hit. Bell was on the mound in the
first four innings. She allowed one hit and three runs in only
55 pitches. Lynnsey Lane closed out the game by pitching two
innings and giving up one hit, two walks, and no runs scored.
In the second game of the night, the Lady War Eagles
would face an unfamiliar opponent in Oglethorpe County. In
this game, Oglethorpe County came out strong. They took an
early 4-2 lead after one inning. However, the Lady War Eagles
would settle in offensively and defensively and shut down their
opponent. The Lady War Eagles scored four runs in the second
and three more in the fourth inning. Finally Oglethorpe would
score a run in the fifth, but Jenkins County would add one more
in the top of the sixth. In the end, Jenkins County took a 10-5
win! The Lady War Eagles had 12 hits in game number two.
Jakhaila Oglesby led the way in hits having a 4 for 4 night at
the plate, in addition, she added 3 RBIs. Laura Dailey finished
with 3 hits on 4 at-bats. Shayna Lake had 2 hits and 3 RBIs,
Ava Brantley, Lynnsey Lane, and Mya Abraham all had 1 hit
each. Lane was on the mound in this game pitching all six
innings, allowing 7 hits and 5 runs.
The Lady War Eagles will travel to Brayan County on
Tuesday night at 5:30, and then they will have their first home
game of the season against a very good Screven County team.
Home games are played at the Jenkins County Recreation
Department. Come out and support your Lady War Eagle
softball team.
will be
football. You
This season, when NCAA football
and NFL football kick-off, you will
have a chance to win! Each week
in the Jenkins County Times games
picked from college and professional
will choose who you believe will be the winner of each
game. Then, there will be one game chosen by the Sports
editor that will be the tie-breaker and you will guess the
final score or some other tie-breaking challenge. There will
be one winner each week. At the end of the Pigskin Pick’em
challenge, which will take place after NCAA conference
championship weekend in December, the winner from each
week will be placed in a hat for the grand prize. Prizes
will be announced later. The games will start being picked
before the first games of the season! Stay tuned for more
details in the weeks ahead.

The Boys’Are Back
The last time the War Eagles football team was on the field it was November and there
was a chill in the air. Friday night, football was back. The War Eagles traveled to Bryan
County for their first scrimmage game of the new season, giving fans a glimpse into this
year’s team. Photo by Brad Asbury

Redskins. The War Eagles won 20-18 in come-from-behind, exciting fashion. Photo by

The defense of the War Eagles was known for their hard hits last season, and they showed
up again this past week. Bryan County had a strong pass attack, but the War Eagles kept
the game close, eventually setting up the War Eagles' win with 7:34 left in the game.

Friday nights are made for
high school football and the
boys of fall out on the field.
Friday night the War Eagles
football team traveled to
Bryan County for their first of
two scrimmage games and the
first of what is hoped will be
a long season on fall nights!
Scrimmages are designed to
help players get better, give
coaches a better understanding
of what needs to be done, and allows
some of the younger players onto the
field.
As with most years, the War Eagles
displayed a very skilled
running attack featuring
more than two running backs
carrying the ball. This years
team will have even more
speed than in previous years,
and we were also shown that
the War Eagles can air the ball
out if necessary.
Bryan County took the lead
early and would continue to
push that lead until the 4th
quarter. With 7:34 left in the
game, the War Eagles took the
lead. Eventually, the hard-hitting War
Eagles would get big stops in the last
minutes.
While the starters only
played the first half, fans
should be really encouraged
by watching this team in the
first scrimmage game. On
display was good running,
hard-hitting, completed passes,
and a core of young players
that kept pushing all the way
to a win.
The War Eagles will be
on the field for another
scrimmage this week and
the game will take place at
7:30 at Roy Head Stadium
which is on the campus of Jenkins
County Schools. This game will play
a different format and will feature
Jenkins County, Bulloch
Academy, and Glascock
County. The War Eagles will
face Glascock County for two
quarters, followed by Bulloch
Academy and Glascock
County for two quarters, and
the night will end with Jenkins
County and Bulloch Academy
facing off for two quarters.
We must remember that
scrimmages are designed to
make the players better and for
coaches to see what changes
need to be made as the season
gets started!
