PARKER-
APPLEWHITE
HOUSE
The Lucinda Parker-
Applewhite House
This was the first house built for Joseph Polhill
Applewhite and his wife Lucinda “Lou” Parker Applewhite
in Millen in 1893. It was begun in late 1892 and finished
early 1893. The two-story columns are a very unfortunate
addition from the 1980s. This was originally an attractive,
fairly simple Queen Anne house w/ probably a one-story
porch, although the portion over the front door may have
had a covered balcony. Note the nice chimney and gable
detail survived at the time. This beautiful part of history
was demolished in the past few years. Some of the lumber
from the home has been salvaged along with some of the
brick. The home sat on the comer of ?????????
directly behind Millen Baptist Church.
Surge in Seasonal
Influenza Sweeps
Across the Nation
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
Nationwide, seasonal influenza has surged to alarming
levels, with a substantial increase in reported cases across
the majority of the country. The latest statistics released by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for
the week ending December 16, 2023, reveal a concerning
trend, indicating a 5.1% rise in positive cases of H1N1
Influenza compared to the previous week, affecting 12.8%
of the population.
The impact of this influenza outbreak is evident in the
rising number of hospital admissions, with 9,825 patients
currently seeking medical attention for the vims. In response
to the escalating situation, the Department of Public Health
has issued a stem statement emphasizing the critical need
for influenza vaccination.
“Every individual over the age of six months should get
a flu vaccine - not just for their own protection, but to
protect others around them who may be more vulnerable
to the flu and its complications. It takes about two weeks
after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to
develop in the body, so now is the time to get a flu shot,” the
Department of Public Health urged.
Flu symptoms can vary in intensity from person to person,
encompassing fever, cough, sore throat, mnny or stuffy
nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Certain
demographics are at a higher risk of developing severe flu-
related complications, including individuals aged 65 and
older, those with chronic medical conditions such as asthma,
diabetes, or heart disease, pregnant women, and children
under 5 years old, particularly those under 2 years old.
The Department of Public Health is strongly urging
citizens to promptly contact their local health providers,
health departments, or local pharmacies for more
information on vaccination availability and other preventive
measures. With the ongoing surge in influenza cases, swift
action is cmcial to safeguard the health and well-being of
individuals and communities across the nation.
New Dollar
General Opens
The newest store in Millen opened it’s doors last week to
little fanfare. The Dollar General on the Sylvania Bypass
is officially open. This is the second store of its name in
Jenkins County.
Dollar General Corporation was founded in 1939 on
the mission statement that every time the doors are open,
employees have a purpose driven commitment in mind.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides the
opportunity for schools, nonprofit organizations, and
libraries within a 15-mile radius of a store to apply for
grants to support literacy programs. Joy McMillan is the
store manager. Photo contributed.
Rotarians joined by
guests
Rotarians from the Millen Rotary Club, joined by several
guests, came together to spread festive joy and brighten the
holiday season for the wonderful residents of Pruitt Health
Bethany-Millen. The Senior Santa Project, organized by
the dedicated Rotarians, aimed to ensure that each senior
received a special gift this Christmas.
The heartwarming event saw smiles and expressions of
gratitude on the faces of the seniors who were the recipients
of this thoughtful gesture. Recognizing the importance
of sharing the magic of Christmas with everyone, the
Rotarians went above and beyond to make it a reality for
the beloved community members.

ff Nobody But You"
by: Charles Bukowski
Nobody can save you but
yourself
and it will be easy enough to fail
so very easily
but don’t, don’t, don’t,
just watch them,
listen to them,
do you want to be like that?
a faceless, mindless, heartless
being?
do you want to experience
death before death?
nobody can save you but
yourself
and you’re worth saving,
it’s a war not easily won
but if anything is worth winning then
this is it.

The Polar Express
comes to Millen
The Historic Pal Theatre and Performance Arts
Center was the place to be, Friday, December 22nd.
This was the place The Polar Express Train was loaded
with over 200 plus children and adults of all ages.
As you entered the theatre, the loud sound of "all
aboard" rang throughout the old walls of this historic
place. Each child and their parent was invited to climb
aboard the famous train, but first having their own
"express ticket" stamped with the words "believe".
After entering the station, each child was given
their own special bell with red ribbon. Everyone was
invited to color and to make express necklaces made
available from The Jenkins County Players.
It was also "Pajama Night" at the historic theatre
with families invited to wear matching PJ's that
complemented the theme.
The historic theater concession stand was available
with drinks, candies and popcorn. Sponsored by The
Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce.
During the show, The Jenkins County Players
presented hot chocolate to every passenger during the
famous "hot chocolate" scene of the award winning
movie.
The night ended with the big Christmas Cash Prize
being given to the one family with the best matching
pajama's of the night. The $100 Christmas cash was
awarded to the Hearn Family of Millen. The family
was adorned with matching Rudolph the Reindeer
PJ's along with their own special lighted red nose.
As the conductor of the night, I found that every
passenger had a wonderful ride aboard the Polar
Express.
Many parents expressed how much fun their
family had as they felt as if they were truly aboard
the Christmas train. All families expressed that
performances of this type that includes the entire
community of Jenkins County is what we need.
