Sports Across the
Nation.. . 4 Year in
Review
From football, basketball, baseball, and tennis; both college and
professional, there were unforgettable moments in the wide world of
sports. The first championship of the year began on January 9th. The
game was held between the Georgia Bulldogs and the TCU Horned
Frogs. The game appeared to be a mismatch on paper, and it was even
more so on the field. The Bulldogs won their second consecutive
national championship by a score of 65-7.
The Super Bowl would be the next championship. The Kansas City
Chiefs would be crowned champions after defeating the Philadelphia
Eagles 38-35. The Chiefs winning the Super Bowl was exciting, but the
news that dominated the Chiefs in 2023 seemed to be the 2023/2024
season. Even more, the news had nothing to do with on-field activity.
The Chiefs have been dominated by high ticket prices and merchandise
sales that are greatly marked up. One of the star players, Travis Kelce
began dating music superstar Taylor Swift. Teenage girls became the
biggest fans of the Chiefs, and this dominated the news.
One of the biggest events every year is the NCAA Basketball
Championship, the three weeks of tournament games known as March
Madness provides some of the greatest basketball games and upsets.
Purdue, one of the tournament's top seeds, became only the second
number one seed to be ousted by a sixteen seed. Farleigh Dickinson
defeated them. The tournament would eventually be won by the
University of Connecticut Huskies. The women’s championship was a
showdown of powers as Iowa lost to LSU.
The week after the NCAA championships John Rham won the
Masters golf tournament in Augusta. The same week Major League
Baseball began its season. The Atlanta Braves dominated the scene
all year long finishing with the best record in baseball. However, the
Braves were quickly out of the playoffs for the second year in a row
to the Philadelphia Phillies. In the end, the longshot team, the Texas
Rangers won the World Series.
In other sports highlights of 2023, Lebron James became the highest-
scoring player in NBA history. In April, he scored the 38,888th point of
his career that began in 2003. CoCo Goff won the US Open becoming
the first American woman to win the US Open in many years. During
the MLB offseason, Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year 500-million-do liar
contract becoming the highest-paid player in MLB history. And as 2023
ended, Michigan defeated Alabama and Washington took down Texas
in the NCAA Football playoffs.
Buzzer beaters, big tackles, walk-off home runs, big hits, no-hitters,
and so much more make sports exciting to watch year in and year out.
If 2024 is as exciting as 2023 in sports, it will be a great year! The
year starts with the National Championship game on January 8th as
Washington and Michigan will fight it out for football's biggest award.
Enjoy your sports! Enjoy 2024!

The Photo of the Year that defined the War Eagles’ sports
season and the football season was taken by Danielle M.

the final horn sounded the fireworks filled the air.

It’s also unclear if Johnson would accept a bipartisan
agreement from the Senate. He argued that the House “has
done its job” in passing H.R. 2.
“H.R. 2 is the necessary ingredient,” Johnson said.
However, Senate Democrats have already stated that H.R.
2 is a non-starter.
GOP immigration policies
That legislation the House passed in May mirrors Trump-
era immigration policies, such as resuming hundreds of
miles of construction of a border wall, stripping funding
from nonprofits that aid migrants, beefing up staffing
of Border Patrol agents and restricting the use of parole
programs.
Republicans are seeking to curb the Biden administration’s
use of parole to allow nationals from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua
and Venezuela to work temporarily in the U.S.
The delegation on Wednesday was also led by Rep.
Tony Gonzales of Texas, whose congressional district is
on the border. His office, and Johnson’s office, did not
respond to States Newsroom’s request for a list of all the
GOP lawmakers in attendance. Johnson said there were 64
members on the trip.
Johnson said that Republicans met with local residents
and sheriffs and toured a CBP processing facility.
He criticized the Biden administration for rolling back
immigration policies from the Trump administration, such
as stopping the construction of the border wall and ending
the “remain in Mexico” policy.
The protocols require migrants from Mexico who are
seeking asylum to remain in Mexico while their paperwork
is processed, but many advocates have documented harm,
separation and deaths to those who must comply with the
program.
In October, the Biden administration decided to allow
for the construction of additional border wall along the
U.S.-Mexico border, angering Democrats and immigration
advocates.
Mayorkas impeachment to be launched
The House Homeland Security Committee on Jan. 10
will also hold a hearing to begin an impeachment case
against U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary
Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of immigration at
the border.
Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, who chairs the committee,
said at the border press conference that his committee has
finished its investigations into Mayorkas and that “you’re
going to see a lot more coming here very soon.”
“The greatest domestic threat to the national security and
the safety of the American people is Secretary Alejandro
Mayorkas,” Green said. “He, through his policies, has
defied and subverted the laws passed by the United States
Congress.”
In a statement to States Newsroom, DHS spokesperson
Mia Ehrenberg said that House Republicans were “wasting
valuable time and taxpayer dollars pursuing a baseless
political exercise that has been rejected by members of both
parties and already failed on a bipartisan vote.
“There is no valid basis to impeach Secretary Mayorkas,
as senior members of the House majority have attested, and
this extreme impeachment push is a harmful distraction
from our critical national security priorities,” Ehrenberg
said. “Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of
Homeland Security will continue working every day to
keep Americans safe.”
