Uncle Roger's Tales of the Ogeechee
As I have told you in past articles on the Ogeechee,
flathead catfish are non-native to the Ogeeche River
and an illegal introduction of the species would
be devastating to native fish populations. The
introduction was made in the last couple of years, but
the riverkeeper says they have taken care of the few
that were in the Ogeechee. However, they warn to
keep your eye out. These are destructive fish.
This week, I want to discuss regular catfish fishing
and what the Ogeechee river provides. The Ogeechee
river has always provided fish for food for many
many years. One of the best kind of fish I love to
catch is Catfish. The river offers .white catfish,
channel catfish and of course bullheads are plentiful
in the Ogeechee. Catfish are generally concentrated
where there is a combination of swift water and heavy
cover. White catfish abundance increases closer to
the estuary. And typical catfish bait, worms, cut-bait,
etc. are good fished near the bottom of the river in
relatively deep holes produce good results.
I find that fishing with womis is the best source
to use to catch the largest catfish. I usually drop my
line to the bottom and just wait. Lately, it hasn't taken
long for a catfish to hit.
I have a friend that recently told me that the
Ogeechee has always had a vast array of Catfish. He
and his friends do what they call a "catfish catch trip"
down the Ogeechee several times a year and come
back with a large batch everytime.
I know if you stick to what you already know and
add some of these suggestions, you will be catching
catfish by the cooler loads!
Fish in the cold weather! It is fun! But, bundle up!
Happy Trails! ,

In an annual tradition that celebrates
excellence and dedication in the junior

Georgia 4-H are excited to announce
the search for six exceptional young individuals to be spotlighted in the Georgia Junior Livestock

The spotlight aims to showcase students who embody the values of hard work, fair play, character,
and continuous project growth. Beyond the accolades of ribbons or the scale of their operations, the
organizations are on the lookout for individuals who epitomize the essence of the junior livestock

outstanding contributions to the livestock program.
The selection process is rigorous, considering factors such
as work ethic, sportsmanship, character, and a demonstrated
commitment to the growth of their projects. The chosen students
will find their profiles prominently featured in the Georgia Junior
Livestock Catalog at the State Livestock Show in February.
This initiative underscores Georgia FFA and Georgia 4-H's
