When Jesus the Healer,
passed through Galilee
I have directed music at many revivals, and this one special
revival comes to mind during the beginning of every new year.
It was in the late eighties and it was a very cold on a Tuesday
night. Now, on Tuesdays during a revival, I always made this
a special "select a hymn" night for the congregation. When I
asked for hymn suggestions, this one little hand went up and
from the quaint voice of a little older lady came the name of
the hymn, "When Jesus the Healer". She seemed to be very
cold, because she was covered in several coats along with a
hat that covered her ears.
Now, I have to say, I did not know the hymn at that particular
time, but, I would sight read it. (Something I did a good bit
during every "select a hymn" night.)
Of course, we sang all the verses and each word really
ministered to my heart. My favorite verse said, "When blind
Bartimaeus cried out to the Lord, Heal us, heal us today! his
faith made him whole and his sight was restored. Heal us,
Lord Jesus."
I would have loved to be there when his sight was restored.
How wonderful that would have been. However, Jesus still
performs the same miracles today, as he did in the Bible.
As I watched the little lady m the congreation sing, she
was singing straight from the heart. Eyes closed, every verse
memorized, and singing to the top of her lungs. Through all
the coats and head scarf and hat, you could hear that pure
soprano voice.
I found out later on, this little lady was a singer back in the
early 1900's in Church revivals
all over the west. I can tell you,
from that point on, she sang
at least one special solo, at a
minimum of, once a month.
What a blessing she became to
our music ministry.
The gospels tell many stories
of Jesus' healing ministry. This
hymn includes several of those
accounts, giving one or two
lines to each story, along with
two short refrains that bnng us
into the stories.
Not only do we remember the
love and compassion of Jesus as he went about healing people,
we see increasing need for healing all around us yet today.
Many churches are responding to that need by scheduling
more services where prayers for healing are prominent.
The hymn was written by Peter David Smith, who was born
in Weybridge, Surrey, England, in 1938. After working for a
time in the aircraft industry, he became a Methodist minister.
A hallmark of his ministry was his gift as a folksinger. Though
trained as a classical pianist, the folk guitar became his
instrument of choice. Folksongs often tell stories, or have a
narrative quality. The guitar is the preferred instrument of the
folksinger.
Mr. Smith composed this song during a course he was
teaching on contemporary worship for the Iona Community
in 1975. Sing along with me....
1. When Jesus the healer passed through Galilee,
Heal us, heal us today!
the deaf came to hear and the blind came to see.
Heal us, Lord Jesus.
2. A paralyzed man was let down through a roof.
Heal us, heal us today!
His sins were forgiven, his walking the proof.
Heal us, Lord Jesus.
3. The death of his daughter caused Jairus to weep.
Heal us, heal us today!
The Lord took her hand, and he raised her from sleep.
Heal us, Lord Jesus.
4. When blind Bartimaeus cried out to the Lord,
Heal us, heal us today!
his faith made him whole and his sight was restored.
Heal us, Lord Jesus.
5. The lepers were healed and the demons cast out.
Heal us, neal us today!
A bent woman straightened to laugh and to shout.
Heal us, Lord Jesus.
6. The twelve were commissioned and sent out in twos,
Heal us, heal us today!
to make the sick whole and to spread the good news.
Heal us, Lord Jesus.
7. Thereis still so much sickness and suffering today.
Heal us, heal us today!
We gather together for healing, and pray:
Heal us, Lora Jesus.

VARIANCE

the variance. That doesn't mean the city will go out
there tomorrow and begin demolition. This gives
them [the resident] some time to address the situation,"
Reeves emphasized, reassuring that immediate
demolition actions were not on the agenda.
The denial of the variance undoubtedly places
a burden on the property owner, forcing them to
reconsider their plans for the Palmer Row lot. The
City Council's decision stems from a commitment to
uphold established codes and regulations, ensuring
uniformity and compliance with construction
standards across the city.
While this ruling may present challenges for the
resident, it also underscores the importance of adhering
to zoning and building regulations to maintain the
overall integrity of the community. The resident now
has a window of time to explore alternatives and
find a resolution that aligns with the city's guidelines,
preventing any immediate demolition measures.

@§alm6 S3 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me
to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He re-
storeth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's
sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou
anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mer
cy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord for ever.
