Big Week of Basketball Ahead
Regional play has begun for Jenkins County basketball. The War Eagles and Lady War
Eagles are battling through the part of the season that counts regarding regional and
state playoffs. Both teams have battled hard through the first part of the season with the
Lady War Eagles sitting at 5-8 overall and 1-0 in the region. The War Eagles are now
10-2 and 1-0 in regional play and are currently ranked 8 th in the state by Sandy Spiel.
The week ahead is going to provide some very tough competition for both squads. On
Tuesday the teams will travel to Montgomery County. While the Montgomery County
boys’ have struggled through this season, the Montgomery County Eagles are presently
ranked #1 in the state and are undefeated. Year in and year out the Eagles provide the
toughest test for the Lady War Eagles.
Then Friday night is the night locals have had circled on the calendar since the
schedule was first released. At 6:00 PM the Lady War Eagles will tip off against Portal.
While this game will provide some great basketball action, it is the game that follows
that has been talked about. The boys’ game against Portal will feature two top-10 teams
battling it out on the court.
In the most recent rankings, Portal is ranked #1 and they feature a roster that is filled
with seniors who have won the region the last three seasons. However, the Jenkins
County War Eagles, with their top 10 ranking will bring a veteran lineup that has been
rolling all season long. The last time these two teams faced off, Portal won the game in
a battle in the regional championship. This game will most likely be a preview of the
regional championship game in February.
Saturday will also be another big night on James A Ford Court at Jenkins County High
School. On that night, at 6:00 PM, 4A Burke County will face off against the Lady War
Eagles followed by an approximate tip-off of 7:30 for the boys’ game. The Burke County
girls’ team is 8-7 overall and the boys’ team enters ranked in the top 20 of 4A and is 12-
2 overall.
This week at Jenkins County could easily be titled “Rivalry Week” for the War Eagles.
While Burke County is not in the same class or region as the War Eagles, for many
years these teams have battled it out on the basketball court drawing large crowds.
Without a doubt, the game against Portal has been a fierce rivalry for many years.
The home games on Friday night and Saturday night will begin at 6:00 PM with the girls’
game, and the boys’ game will tip off approximately twenty minutes after the girls’ game
ends. Be sure to be at Jenkins County High School this week for great basketball
action.
