The Bank of Millen was established in 1893 as
a part of a system of banks managed by Mr. W.S.
Witham, who was it's very first president. The Bank
opened it's doors on March 1, 1893 in Millen. Local
businesses could buy stock in the bank. Several local
businesses purchased stocks, such as, Daniel Sons &
Palmer Co., The C. Parker Company, Elias Daniel and
J. P. Applewhite owned the largest amount of stock
in the bank. Approximently, $21. 475.00. The assests
at tthe end of the first year for the entire bank were
$36,588.56. In 1896, A branch of the bank opened
in Swainsboro, Ga. The bank of Millen ended its
association with the Witham Banking System in 1910.
From the first daythe Bank of Millen opened on
Cotton Avenue, it occupied the same location for over
61 years. The bank then moved to another Cotton
Avenue location and remained there for 26 plus years.
It finally moved to a modem state of the art location
in 1981 on the comer of Cotton Ave. and Winthrope
Avenue.
For over one hundred years, through war and the
depression, the Bank of Millen was always able to
pay it's stockholders a dividens. Now, there were a
few days in 1933 during the depression, when then
President Roosevelt ordered a Bank Holiday. Other
than that, they were always open and serving the
residents of Jenkins County.
In 1985, the management and board of directors
made the decision to merge with Allied Bankshares,
Inc. of Thomson, Georgia. The decision was successful.
It offered greater services to their customers as well as
continued financial growth.
The current bank, where The Bank of Millen was
located, was sold to Regions Bank in 2007 and is still
there today.
I have to say, I was not here when the Bank of
Millen was in business. However, I do have a few of
the special giveaway items that were offered by the
bank along with some deposit records that provide a
good bit of history. It is amazing what you can find
being an Auctioneer and selling estates.

Impromptu Band Concert at B&T’s
-William Wordsworth
Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning: silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!
-William Wordsworth

This past Saturday the Jenkins County
High School War Eagle Band braved the
cold and provided live music in front of the
local B&T's Food Fresh Market. Joining the
band were a couple of musicians with more
white hair than not, recent JCHS graduates,
and future War Eagle Band members from
the middle school. All proceeds raised help
the band take their music on the road and
perform to a wider audience.
