DOING OR BEING
Cathy Rigby was a member of the United States Women’s
Gymnastics team in the Olympics in Munich, Germany in
1972. Many remember the tragedy caused by terrorists at
the Olympics that year. No one remembers Cathy for her
one and only desire that year - to win a gold medal.
She trained hard and did very well. But she did not win
the gold medal. After her event, she sought out her mother.
Weeping uncontrollably, she threw her arms around her and
said, “I’m sorry, but I did my best.”
"We know that you did, and God knows that you did,”
replied her mother. She then added, “Doing your best is
much better than being recognized for being the best.”
Winning an event in track and field, or any other athletic
contest requires three things: purpose, detemiination, and
dedication. If an athlete lacks any of the three, victory is
doomed.
Paul describes training for and winning a race as a way
to illustrate how the Christian life demands the same
characteristics that are necessary for an athlete to “win
the gold:” self-denial and a grueling training program. As
Christians, we are running toward our reward, which we
will receive when we arrive in heaven. If we want to “win
the race” and receive the prize that God offers us, we must
sacrifice the things in life that keep us from placing Him
first in our lives.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we all want to “win the
prize” You have waiting for us. Give us the courage and
willingness to discipline ourselves and become victorious.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture For Today: So I run with purpose in every step.
I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an
athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that
after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. 1
Corinthians 9:24-27

,r Manna...and Cucumbers?"
"Now the rabble that was among them had a strong
craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said,
“Oh that we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate
in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the
leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now our strength is
dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look
at. ” - Numbers 11:4-6 ESV
I enjoy southern food. From country cooking to potluck
dinners, to community BBQs, to finger foods - we southerners
know how to eat. We seem to prioritize sandwiches in our
finger foods lineup - pimento cheese sandwiches, pineapple
sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches. Cucumber sandwiches,
not one of my favorites, but something the Israelites craved
in Numbers 11!
Well, maybe not cucumber sandwiches but cucumbers,
melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. That seems like a strange
combination, but all of these foods are flavorful and have
different textures. Since leaving Egypt, the Israelites had
been eating not just the same type of food, but the same
food: Manna. What was Manna?
Manna is hard to describe because the word Manna means
“What is it?” In Hebrew. Manna was bread from Heaven,
sent down each morning by God at daybreak and it gathered
like the dew on the ground. The Bible says in Psalm 78:25
that the Israelites ate the “bread of angels”. In Numbers
11:8, Moses says Manna tasted like “fine pastries cooked
with oil.” Whatever this Manna looked like and tasted like
we know this: it tasted great, it supplied all the nutritional
value Israel needed, and God sent it every day except the
Sabbath (but He sent twice as much on the day before).
Why would people complain about eating the bread
of Heaven? Why would people complain about having a
steady, unending supply of bread? Numbers 11:4 says that
had a “strong craving”. That is translated lust. They lusted
after more than what God gave them. Lust is a strong,
overwhelming physical desire - a craving that must be
satisfied. The Israelites lusted after more than what God
gave.
What was God’s response? He didn’t give them
cucumbers, but He did send them quail. So much quail
that He told them they would get sick of it. Then when He
sent it, while the quail was still in their mouths, God sent a
plague and killed many of them. He gave them what they
lusted after, but their lust killed them. Psalm 78:31 says that
“God killed the strongest of them; He laid low the young
men of Israel.”
Here’s the takeaway: Lust kills. Lust kills strong men.
Lust kills young men. God will graciously provide for us
what we need, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying
what God gives us, and even asking for more of it! It is
when we turn our hearts away from God and His provision
and lust after more of something other than what God wants
to give us, that we are in danger.
Jesus said in John 6:48, “I am the Bread of Life.” The
Manna in the wilderness, the Bread of Heaven, pointed to
Jesus, the Bread of Life. When we have Jesus, we have
everything we need. We are tempted to go after things
that are attractive to our physical appetites, but we need to
remember the Israelites craving for other things outside of
what God graciously provided, and remember the severe
consequences of their lust, death.
