I've found a friend
in Jesus, he's
everything to me
Back when I was 14 years old while on a
camping trip with my family, I was asked to lead
music at the campground Church service site.
The site was located in a pine wooded area of the
campground. It had a concrete pad, a ragged old
pulpit and short benches made out of logs for the
congregation. It was almost like being near the
river jordan. Except, it was right at a lake not a
river.
Before the service started, I had a request for us
to sing, the hymn, " I've found a friend in Jesus."
And we did. Acapella, and with a group of about
40 folks in attendance,
the song rang throughout
the camping park and
resounded across the
lake. It was one of the
greatest things I had
ever experienced.
The lyrics of this
lovely old hymn called
I've found a friend in
Jesus, he's everything
to me or "The lily of
the valley” as it is -Charles Williams Fry
sometimes referred to,
was written in 1881 by Charles Williams, with
music by William Shakespeare Hays. It was
originally written for the Salvation Army.
Charles William Fry was born on May 30, 1838
in Alderbury, Wiltshire, England. His birth name
was William Charles Fry. He died on August
24, 1882 at Park Hall, Polmont, Stirlingshire,
Scotland. Charles William Fry was a bricklayer
by trade, taking after his father. Fry however, was
also a versatile musician who was able to play
the violin, cello, piano, comet, and harmoica, and
leading an orchestra at the Wesleyan chapel in
Alderbury.
One interesting point to note about this hymn
is that the music of the hymn had its origins in
a secular tune, in this case a popular vaudeville
song, “Little Old Log Cabin.”
I've found a friend in Jesus or the lily of the
valley is mentioned in the Song of Solomon in the
Bible, too. Legend tells that Mary’s tears turned
to the lily of the valley when she cried at the
cross. This is the reason for the third considered
alternate name, “Mary’s Tears.”
I sure hope you have found a "friend in Jesus
too. Sing with me....
I’ve found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Apple-tree of trees, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
1 In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my
stay,
He tells me every care on Him to roll:
He’s the Apple-tree of trees, the Bright and
Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
2 He all my griefs has taken, and all my sorrows
borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower;
I’ve all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart, and now He keeps me by His
power.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt
me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal:
He’s the Apple-tree of trees, the Bright and
Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
3 He’ll never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me
here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll:
He’s the Apple-tree of trees, the Bright and
Morning Mar,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
