Two Heartbreaking Losses
Friday night and Saturday night saw some of the most intense high school basketball
games you could see on the same court on the same weekend. On Friday night,
regional rival and #1 ranked Portal Panthers came to Jenkins County for a showdown
of two top 10’s in GHSA Class A Division 2.
The game started with a big run by the War Eagles taking their lead to as much as ten
points in the opening minutes. However, the top-ranked Panthers would not be slowed
by a deficit. Portal cut the lead to 1 on free throws towards the end of the quarter. The
second quarter was a reversal of fortunes. Portal jumped quickly and outscored the War
Eagles 14-5 in the second quarter and in the third outscored the War Eagles 15-14.
The War Eagles had a lot of fights in them
the fourth quarter. With a deficit of nine points,
the War Eagles would not give up or give in.
With one minute to go, the War Eagles trailed
56-49, but a War Eagle 3 followed by a shot
from the inside by Tyler Williams cut the lead to
two points with less than a minute to play. The
last seconds of the game remained close, and
Portal was required to hit their free throws down
the stretch to hold onto the lead. With less than
15 seconds remaining, one free throw was made
and the lead grew to three. Two close threes,
including a controversial no-call from the three-
point line ended the game with Portal winning
59-56 before a packed house!
Saturday night's game would look much the
same. This time, however, it was the War Eagles
that jumped out on top first and took a lead
at halftime of six points. However, the third
quarter saw the lead trimmed as Burke County
would outscore the War Eagles 15-10. The
fourth quarter would feature an intense battle
defensively. With less than 10 seconds
and the game tied, Burke County had possession
of the ball. A jump shot rolled off the rim, and
after a quick battle for the board, Burke County
was able to drop the ball into the basket to
secure the win 48-46.
Both Portal and Burke County are two of the
toughest opponents

the War Eagles will face all season. Jenkins County and Portal
will meet again this season on the last game of the regular
season on February 9th at Portal.
Baseball America recently released their “sleeper”
list for 2024 and Jenkins County native and Burke
County graduate Bill Knight Jr. was listed for the
Seattle Mariners. Knight is in his second full season
in the Mariners organization and was drafted out
of Mercer University in 2022. Despite an injury
last season to his wrist, Knight rose through the
ranks making it to high-A baseball last season after
starting at the lowest level of the MLB farm system.
Last season Knight played 3 games in the low
A, moving up to A for 55 games, and finishing for
the Everett Aquasox for the final 12 games of the
season. Currently, Knight is listed on the Double-A
Arkansas Travelers team. In two seasons as an
outfielder, Knight has batted .291 with seven home
runs.
The “Sleeper List” for Baseball America is defined
as any prospect-eligible player who does not rank
within his organization’s top 10 prospects and was
not designated as a breakout player for 2024. Even
though they were not on these lists, the sleepers for
Baseball America are those who have received less
fanfare but could surprise in 2024. Baseball America describes itself as the Bible of
Baseball since 1981. They focus on every level of baseball providing the most in-depth
coverage of the game. Baseball America is the go-to for college baseball, prospect talks,
out and in-season discussions of players in the MLB and so much more.

named a “sleeper” player for
2024 by Baseball America.
