The Will to Win
It was the first practice of the football season. The
captain of the team was trying to impress his fellow
teammates with his leadership skills. Pacing back and
forth in front of the team, he was doing his best to get
them excited. Finally, as his voice reached a level of great
intensity, he shouted, “We’ll win because we have the
will to win!”
The coach, looking rather amused said, “Don’t fool
yourself, son. The will to win is important. But more
important than the will to win is the importance to
surrender to hard work, sore muscles, aching joints,
sweat running into your eyes, and long hours of studying
our plays.” In other words, winning requires hard work -
not simply a will. What is required of athletes who want
to be victorious on a football field is true of the Christian
who is called to live a victorious life for Christ. Paul
said, “Spend your time and energy in training yourself
for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but
spiritual exercise is much more important for it promises a
reward in this life and the life to come.” Spiritual exercise
- studying God’s Word, praying, worshipping, fellowship,
and serving Him as well as others - and the desire to
achieve success for the Christian does not come easy or
simply being willing. It requires a life of discipline and
surrender to the will of God. Paul reminds us, however,
that if we do the “required work” we will be rewarded in
this life and the life to come.
Prayer: Lord, You never promised us a life of ease. But
for Your sake, we ask for Your strength and power to live
a life that is worthy of You and victorious over sin. In
Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture For Today: Spend your time and energy
training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise
has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more
important for it promises a reward in this life and the life
“Asparagus and Patience”
” Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the
Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the
earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and
the late rains. “ -James 5:7
Asparagus is a polarizing vegetable - some people love
it, and others hate it. I’m not sure how you feel about
asparagus, but we can all agree on one thing - it takes great
investment and patience to grow it. It is not until the third
year after planting that you can harvest your entire crop of
asparagus. Growing asparagus is a three-year investment to
enjoy its fruit!
If you know a farmer, you know that they are an example
of hard work, patience, and faith as they prepare, plant,
spray, water, tend, wait, and harvest. James says that as we
follow Jesus, we are to follow the example of the farmer.
Following Jesus daily requires hard work, patience, and
faith. The word patient in James 5:7 means to “suffer long”.
We are to have the patience of the asparagus farmer and
then some. We must wait on the Lord - however long it
takes for God to move. The longer we wait on God, the
more important it is to continue to wait on Him. What are
you waiting on the Lord for? Consider the farmer as you
wait, and wait like he does - planting, spraying, watering,
tending - all the while looking forward to the harvest that he
believes is coming.
James 5:7 also talks about the precious fruit of the earth.
The word precious means “costly” and we know what fruit
is - the reward of planting. The farmer can control what seed
is planted, when and how it is planted, and how much water
and fertilizer it receives - but the actual growth process
is only in the hands of God. God brings the mystery and
power of life to the seed. God’s fruit in our lives is the same
way - He brings the power of life to grow the fruit.
God caused Aaron’s dead staff to grow fruit in Numbers
17. Take note of how Numbers 17:8”...behold, the staff
of Aaron.. .had sprouted and put forth buds and produced
blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.“ It sprouted, put froth
buds, produced blossoms, and produced ripe almonds - four
different stages of fruit! There are always different stages of
God’s fruit in our lives. Take a few moments today and pray
through James 5:7 and ask God to make you like the patient
farmer as He works in and through you!
to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8

ll:OOam - Sunday Morning Praise & Worship
setting the tone for the purpose of the gathering.
Chandra Johnson, a talented vocalist, stirred
the audience with a gospel song performed
without music, filling the room with a soulful
atmosphere.
Mayor King Rocker extended a warm
welcome to those in attendance, acknowledging
the presence of city leaders who came to support
the young scholars in their academic pursuits.
The event took on a reflective and motivational
tone as attendees united in a shared commitment
to education and community.
Jenkins County Sheriff Robert Ogelsby
delivered a scripture reading from 2 Corinthians,
emphasizing the importance of keeping one's
heart in tune with God and following the path
that Jesus sets. He encouraged the audience
to conquer both small and large goals on their
journey.
The guest speaker, Shiamante’ Grimes, a
previous scholarship recipient, captivated
the audience with a dynamic and interactive
speech. She began by engaging everyone in a
rendition of "If You're Happy and You Know
it Clap Your Hands," altering the lyrics to
convey a powerful message about
making a difference. Grimes
challenged the crowd to replace
"Mad" with "Make A Difference,"
transforming the way the song
was sung and emphasizing the
impact of a positive mindset.
In her main address, Grimes
focused on the acronym DREAM:
Determination, Resilience,
Experience, Attitude, and Mindset.
She encouraged everyone to chase
their dreams with determination,
recharge resilience, seek valuable
experiences, maintain a positive
attitude, and foster a mindset that
sees the world in a constructive
light.

rice casserole was served, complemented by a
variety of cakes for dessert. The atmosphere was
not only one of celebration but also a reminder
of the community's dedication to supporting
education.
Nelrose Reese, in a touching moment,
recognized the scholarship fund initiated by
her husband, Rev. David L. Reese, in 2014.
She appealed to attendees to contribute to the
fund, recounting the day when church members
raised $5,000 as an initial step toward the annual
scholarship.
Rev. Broomfield closed the memorable
evening with a poignant message, urging
everyone to "make everyday count and make
sure that you help somebody else, wear out not
rust out." The event left a lasting impression,
emphasizing the power of education, community
support, and the collective pursuit of making a
positive difference in the lives of others.
