William
Lawson Drake
Farmhouse
The William Lawson Drake fannhouse is located on
part of fourteen hundred acres that was a part of Emanuel
County until such time that one half of that land became
part of Jenkins County. The home was built by Lawson
Drake and Rachel Ogelsby after their marriage in 1867.
The home was built from lumber from teh farm and was
put together with pegs. The house was made up of four
large rooms in the front along with a kitchen and dining
room in the back of the home along with a breezeway to
the very rear of the home.
Also on the farm was a grist mill, cotton gin syrup mill,
two large bams and around ten tenant houses.
The Drakes had seven children. They worked on the
farm with their Mother and Father and were all well
educated.
One of their Children, Young Drake, graduated from
the Medical College of Georgia in 1902 and practiced
medicine in Stillmore, Ga. and had an office on the family
farm, (which later became Drake's Chapel Church). Nell
Drake became a School Teacher, Sally Drake owned
one of the largest hotels in Greenville, S.C.. Tom Drake
became a successful farm planter over 5,000 acres of
land.
The Drakes son had a daughter named, Kate and she
inherited the farm in 1935. And today the farm is owned
by Nell O. Frye, Haywood Frye and Lacy Frye III. The
old home place has been restored along with the old
payroll office and office of Lawson Drake. This office
houses alot of the items from the sawmills, and other
businesses that were once located on the property.

How do I love thee?
By Sam Eades, Publisher

The Times
How do I love thee? Let
me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and
breadth and height
My soul can reach, when
feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and
ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of
every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun
and candle-light;
I love thee freely, as men
strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints-I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!-and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

The Manufacturing Institute through the High School
High Tech Program was held at Jenkins County High
School Wednesday, January 10th through Friday, January
12th . The purpose of the training is to leam more
about the field of manufacturing, and students will earn
certifications that can go on a resume and assist with
obtaining employment as they transition out of high
school. Students who completed the Manufacturing
Institute received three industry recognized certifications
upon completion: OSHA10 certification, Lean Six Sigma
White Belt certification, and Hands Only CPR/AED
certification. The program was led by Wayne Adcock, a
military veteran and certified trainer.
Participants were also able to hear from Champion Home
Builders’ Controller, Ryan Duke, regarding his career and
opportunities with Champion Homes. Champion Homes
is the manufacturer of ScotBilt Homes in Millen, GA, and
the largest manufactured housing company in America.
Champion Homes employs approximately 8,400 people
with 40 facilities located throughout the country. Mr.
Duke reiterated the certifications that the students were
earning through the Manufacturing Institute were useful
and necessary within the company. The certifications
also help set students apart from other applicants as it
“demonstrates an understanding of safety procedures and
processes needed to perform the job.” ScotBilt Homes is
currently accepting applications for employment.
