County Commission Elects
Weathersby and Powell as
Chairpersons
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
The first meeting of the new year by the Jenkins County Commission took place
on Jan. 23 at 4 p.m., marking a significant moment in the county's governance. The
commissioners elected Horace Weathersby as the chairperson for the commission.
With Council member Hiller Spann withdrawing his name from Vice Chairperson,
Commissioner Jonathon Powell was elected to fill the vacant vice chair position.
Attorney George Rountree was also re-elected to continue his role as county attorney.
During the meeting, citizen C.J. Green addressed the council, shedding light on
concerns regarding Allgreen’s contract. Green expressed dissatisfaction with the
condition of dumpsters on Lane Road, emphasizing that the contract stipulates a
minimum of two cleanups per month. Allgreen's has requested a rate increase for the
year 2024, prompting a thorough discussion among the commissioners.
Commissioner Powell acknowledged the recurring issue and highlighted that
Allgreen's had already received a 14.4% increase in 2022, citing rising fuel costs as
the reason. Powell emphasized that the county is not responsible for site cleanup, as
per the terms of the contract with Allgreen's. Commissioner Spann suggested that
installing cameras could address the problem, but the lack of Wi-Fi infrastructure
posed a challenge. The commission pledged to explore solutions before deciding on
the proposed rate increase.
In another important decision, the County Commissioners voted on qualifying fees for
the upcoming 2024 election cycle, as set by the Secretary of State's office:
• County Commissioners (Districts 1, 3, 4): $126.00
• Board of Education Council Members (Districts 1, 3, 4): $120.00
• Tax Commissioner: $1,465.70
• Clerk of Court: $1,465.70
• Probate Judge: $1,465.70
• Sheriff: $1,678.57
• Coroner: $271.23
County Administrator Grady Saxon provided an update on the recent bid opening for
the airport beacon renovation. TCA Electrical Contractors secured the bid at $36,750,
with the State covering 75% of the project cost and $9,000 allocated from County
funds.
The commission decided to defer the discussion on the Allgreen's rate increase until
more information could be gathered, demonstrating their commitment to making well-
informed decisions that prioritize the interests of the community.
