Under the
Bleachers
As I write this week’s
articles, the Super Bowl
is being decided. Kansas
City and Baltimore are
battling in the first game,
and it will be followed by
San Francisco and Detroit.
Many are cheering for
the “underdog” story, the
Detroit Lions this season
as they have never played
in the Super Bowl. They
are only 1 of 4 NFL teams
to have never made it
to the big game! The
only team secured at this
moment is the Kansas
City Chiefs!
If you have not noticed
by my writing, my favorite
sport to watch is without a
doubt baseball. Therefore,
the months from about
mid-November (end of
World Series) until the
first day of Spring training
become long. Baseball is
filled with a full spring
training, then a 162-game
schedule, followed by
several weeks of playoffs.
Once baseball season
is over, I find myself
watching basketball, but
many nights we spend
watching family movies
when nothing else is going
on.
I have listed ten of
what I believe are the best
sports movies that have
ever been created for us to
enjoy. Some of the movies
are based on true stories,
some are dramatic, and
some are just lighthearted
fun. Below you will find
these movies. Go online,
to the Jenkins County
Times Facebook page this
week, and you will have
the ability to list some
of your favorite sports
movies!

Here is a did you
know moment. Did you
know that Remember the
Titans (#3) was filmed in
Georgia? Even though
the movie, mostly based
on a true story, was based
in Virginia the movie was
filmed around Atlanta
and Rome, Georgia. One
filming location was at
a restaurant called The
Silver Skillet which
has some of the best
breakfast you can eat in
downtown Atlanta.
From movies to MLB,
Spring Training is only
16 days and 5 hours
from starting (as I write).
There were many moves
in the offseason, and the
Braves have remained
relatively quiet. However,
all predictions still have
the Atlanta Braves as
the best team in baseball.
Once Spring Training
starts, I will start having
some season previews
to prepare you for an
exciting season ahead.
To give you something
to think about for the
week, what is more
important in your life
getting your incentive
or earning a reward?
An incentive is given to
motivate you to a task.
Players have contracts that
give them incentives for
games won, making it to
the Super Bowl, etc. The
Super Bowl for instance
is a reward, the ultimate
reward is given to the
team that endures to end
and outlasts its opponents.
What is our ultimate
reward as believers, or are
we just given an incentive
to be “good boys and
girls?”
Our hope and our reward
is eternal life with Christ
in Heaven. That is granted
to us through Jesus and
His death in our place.
In the end, after we have
finished this race, those
who have trusted in Him
will receive their reward!
If it was just incentives we
would only live for this
world, but we are longing
for a land where all that is
bad is gone! Our reward
is far greater than a Super
Bowl.
That was a lot to think
about while Under the
Bleachers. Keep a blanket
close by, it gets cold this
time of year under the
bleachers! It is almost
time to come out from
under those bleachers and
into spring sports, but
before then, enjoy the
winter sports!

Middle School
Basketball Comes
to An End
Last week the Middle School basketball season came
to an end. Before the playoffs began, the middle school
basketball teams and cheer team celebrated 8th grade night
at the last home game of the season against ECI.
This season, both teams played in the first round of the
regional tournament, but neither was able to advance. Both
teams had some success on the courts with the boys finishing
with two wins and the girls finishing with four wins on the
season. With the end of the basketball season, the middle
school cheerleaders have had their season finally come to
an end as well. They cheer for the football and basketball
teams, making for a long season.

Schedule Release
The cold winter mornings are still upon us, but that
does not stop spring sports. Even on the coldest days,
some War Eagles are on the fields and the courts
preparing for the upcoming season. Once the first
day of Spring arrives at the end of March, most of the
school spring sports will be wrapping up their season.
Last season, all spring sports enjoyed a large measure
of success. The JCHS War Eagles baseball team
made it to the second round of the state tournament
and finished as regional runner-up. The tennis teams
finished with the same result. The high school track
team had many runners finish with medals in the
state tournament. The teams will look to build off last
year’s performances for a successful season.
Coaches for this year’s spring sports are not new to
the War Eagles. Sabrina Dority returns to the sidelines
for the tennis teams, Hil Johnson remains at the helm
of the Track and Field teams, Zac Clark for the high
school baseball team, and Matt Williams will lead the
way for the middle school baseball team.
As the season approaches, we will look to meet our
coaches and look forward to a successful season as we
head back outdoors!
Last season JTMoye medaled in 3 events at the state tournament
with his best being a 2nd place finish in the 300M. In this photo,
he is shown with a 3rd-place finish in the 110M Hurdles. JT and
his track teammates will soon be preparing for a big season
ahead! In addition to great performances, the boys ’ team was
regional champions and the girls ’team finished 3rd overall in the
region. Photo Submitted.

Coach Zac Clark will be back for another season
for the War Eagles baseball team. After graduating
several seniors last year, Clark will be in a bit of a
rebuild mode but will look to have the Eagles ready
when they take the field on February 8th at home.

The Middle School War Eagles had a great season
last year, but this year should be even better. Coach
Williams has a veteran team of 7th and 8th graders
who will be looking to take the region! Shown
during a game last season is Coach Williams with
his players. Photo Submitted.
The Jenkins County Boys ’tennis team from last season
is shown after a win. The team was regional runner-
up last year and advanced to the second round of the
state tournament. The team lost only one player from
this team and have added some additional players
to make a run at a regional championship. The girls ’
team had some to graduate, but they will look to build
on last year’s successes. Photo Submitted.
