Truck Overturns on Highway 21:
Load Shift to Blame
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
A routine journey turned tumultuous
for truck driver Rauames Reyes Bello of
Florida on Saturday afternoon as the load
he was transporting shifted, resulting in
his rig overturning on the intersection of
Highway 21 and 121.
The incident occurred as Bello was
executing a turn east on Georgia Highway
21 from Highway 121. The weight of the
cargo suddenly shifted, causing the truck
to overturn ana temporarily disrupt traffic
in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were
reported in the aftermath of the accident.
According to Bello's statement to
authorities, the incident unfolded when
another driver crossed in front of him
as he was negotiating the turn. This
unexpected maneuver by the other driver
allegedly led to Bello losing control of
the vehicle.
Local law enforcement and emergency
services swiftly responded to the scene,
ensuring the safety of those involved and
managing the traffic disruption caused
by the overturned truck.
The intersection of Highway 21
and 121 witnessed a brief period of
congestion as authorities worked to
clear the overturned truck and assess the
situation. Efforts to safely upright the rig
and remove the cargo were undertaken
efficiently to restore normal traffic flow.

Every year students from across 15 counties audition
for the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State
Band and District Honor Band. Over one thousand
students endured a rigorous audition process in hopes
of being one of the three hundred to earn a spot on
the stage. This year we are proud to announce that
six Jenkins County students qualified for the GMEA
District 1 Honor Bands. That's huge for our small
school. They met with students from across the district
for a day of rehearsal and a wonderful concert the very
next day. The band of 300 performed Saturday, Feb. 3
at the Statesboro first Baptist Church. Admission was
free. Our students did a jam up job!

In a heartwarming display of community
support, the Jenkins County Senior Center
recently hosted a successful fundraiser contest,
with the proceeds benefiting the esteemed Martin
Luther King Jr. (MLK) Scholarship. The highlight
of the event was the presentation of a generous
donation exceeding $750 to the MLK Scholarship
Committee by local philanthropist Lee Wilson.
The check presentation took place amidst a
backdrop of smiles and gratitude as Mr. Lee
Wilson handed over the substantial contribution to
the dedicated members of the MLK Scholarship
Committee. Dr. Giovanni Shumake, Mary Ruffin,
Mabell Johnson, Gwen Watson, and Myrtis Reese
were all present to receive the donation, expressing
their appreciation for the ongoing community
support.
The MLK Scholarship Committee plays a
pivotal role in empowering local students by
awarding scholarships to those who embody the
spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and strive for
academic excellence, leadership, and community
service.

Popeyes Closes
Unexpectedly
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
After more
than 20 years,
the popular
restaurant
chain sent out
a text message
to employees
Sunday evening
around 7 p.m.
“effective on
Feb. 5, 2024,
Popeyes will no longer be open. Please be advised that
no one is being terminated. If you would like to do so
then everyone is welcome to transfer to the Waynesboro
or Louisville locations. Thank you for your time and
commitment.”
Employees were asked to pick up their final checks
Friday at the Waynesboro location. It is unclear at the
time of this printing why management didn’t give
an advanced notice to employees and the public. At
the beginning of this week, representatives with the
franchise were clearing out the former restaurant. No
further information is available at this time. Photo by:

EMS Director Reports
on Department’s
Progress and Challenges
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
In a recent update to the county commission, Jenkins County EMS
Director Henry Young provided a comprehensive report on the state
of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department, outlining both
achievements and challenges.
Young began by addressing the recent changes in the department's
staffing. "We have successfully hired three full-time employees, but
unfortunately, we had to let go of some part-time staff," Young stated.
Despite these efforts, the EMS department remains two employees short
of the optimal staffing level.
Highlighting the demands on the department. Young revealed that in
2023, EMS responded to a staggering 1,423 calls. Notably, the number
of patient transfers has been on the rise, a trend attributed to the shortage
of medical doctors
within the county.
Young emphasized
that an increase in the
number of physicians
could potentially reduce
the need for transfers.
Currently operating
with two ambulances,
Young emphasized
the pressing need
for additional units
