Exciting Week for the
Lady War Eagles
The Lady War Eagles take three wins for the week, two
of which were over regional opponents, and one of those
three was over the number one team in Class A, Division 2.
On Tuesday night, the Lady War Eagles would face
number one-ranked and undefeated Montgomery County.
Earlier in the season, the Lady War Eagles lost to
Montgomery County by twelve points on the road.
From the opening tip, it was obvious the Lady War
Eagles were bent on the upset. The Lady War Eagles came
out pressing from the start and did not let up the pressure
the whole game. The zone press was too much as they
would force Montgomery County into numerous turnovers.
In the second half, Montgomery County pushed very close,
but ultimately Jenkins County would hold on to the narrow
36-31 victory. The win put Jenkins County in a tie for first
place in the regional standings.
Friday night, the Lady War Eagles would travel to ECI
and face a team that had only won one game all season. The
Lady War Eagles won the game 51-43. Saturday night, for
Senior night the Lady War Eagles would play an exciting
game against Claxton. While not a regional opponent, it
was a familiar foe for the ladies.
The Lady War Eagles won by six points over the Tigers
earlier in the season, and Saturday night’s matchup would
go down to the last seconds. The Tigers jumped out to
an early lead and at times would push the lead to nearly
double digits. The Lady War Eagles kept chipping away at
the Tigers and would keep drawing closer to the lead and
finally tying the game up late in the fourth quarter. Finally,
with 17.2 seconds, with a steal by Nevaeh Campbell, the
Lady War Eagles would take the lead. Claxton was fouled,
but unable to convert at the free throw line and Jenkins
County pulled away with the 42-40 win! Four of the last
home games for the Lady War Eagles have been won by
five points or less.
With only three games remaining in the season, the Lady
War Eagles are flying high right now. Presently they are
on a three-game winning streak and have won six out of
their last seven games. In addition to their big win over
Montgomery County, they defeated Burke County and
several close contests. As the Lady War Eagles head to the
final week of the season, the team seems to be firing on all
cylinders and starting to click when it matters the most. If
the season ended today the Lady War Eagles would finish
tied for first place in Region 3 as regional playoffs prepare
to start.
This week they will host New Hampstead (Tuesday),
McIntosh County Academy (Wednesday), and will travel to
Portal on Friday night. The game Tuesday night and Friday
night will begin at 6:00 PM, and the game Wednesday night
against McIntosh County Academy will begin at 5:00 PM.

The final week of the season is looming large on the
horizon for the War Eagles as the season has quickly come
and gone for this talented team. Entering the last week of
the season they have pulled together a 16-5 overall record
and a 6-1 regional record. This past week saw a tough
schedule of Claxton, ECI, and Montgomery County. At the
end of the week, the War Eagles won by an average of 22
points per game.
The games started against regional rival Montgomery
County. The War Eagles defeated the Eagles of Montgomery
County on Tuesday night at home 69-47. They dominated
from the opening tip. The second game of the week at ECI
was not much different. With a 69-50 win, the War Eagles
showed continued dominance in basketball over ECI.
Saturday night was a non-region matchup against Claxton.
Claxton started the game with a 9-2 lead and shooting hot.
Both teams exchanged some big baskets as the game got
rolling in the first quarter; however, the War Eagles were
able to claim the lead. Once the game arrived at halftime,
the lead had grown to 34-23 in favor of the War Eagles. The
second half was dominated by a big offensive performance.
The War Eagles would score nearly 40 points over the last
two quarters while allowing 30. The War Eagles grew their
lead from 11 to a 24-point victory. The final score was War
Eagles 77, Claxton 53.
The season is drawing to a quick close for the War Eagles
and looming large in the headlights is a rematch with Portal.
Portal continues its dominance in both Region 3 and in the
state of Georgia. Sandy Spiel has Portal ranked second in
the Class A Division 2. In the last matchup with Portal that
was held at Jenkins County, the War Eagles lost by three
in a battle! The War Eagles are still ranked ninth in Class
A Division 2 and it is sure to be a war between two top-10
teams.
Before they get to Portal, they will have two regional
matchups. They will face Savannah Classical Academy on
Tuesday night and then a big matchup against McIntosh
County Academy on Wednesday night. McIntosh has had
a great season and will be a tough opponent for the War
Eagles.
