Jesus loves even me
Back in 1984, I was serving as a Minister in a local
Church in a very small town. I had several choirs there.
Adult, Children, Youth and Senior Adult Choirs.
One Sunday a large family visited our services. They
consisted of a Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, and eight
children. And did they fill a pew, you ask? Of course they
did.
It was nice seeing such a full house that particular Sunday
and great seeing 12 visitors.
You know how it is in a small country Church. You
know where everyone usually sits, you always know who
the ushers usually are, you know the choir members, the
organist and pianist, etc. You just know everyone.
Now, I have to say, when it came to singing the hymns,
this family was right on point. They all sang to the top of
their lungs. Very bluegrass mind ya, but very good, and as
I say, right on point.
After the service, the smallest girl came up to me and in a
sweet lilttle voice pulled on my coat and said, "excuse me
sir", and I replied, "yes, ma'am, how are you today?" she
proceeded to ask me if she could sing. Well, of course I said
she could however, it would have to be in tonight's service.
She said quickly, "that is good, we will be back tonight....
bye now and thank you." Very polite little girl, I do say. The
whole family was very kind and visited for a while before
leaving.
Later that evening, the family returned, and the little girl
came up to me with her Grandmother to remind me that
she was singing in the service, I asked her what she was
going to sing and she told me, "Jesus loves even me, and
my Grandmama will play for me." I said "great", and we
both moved on.
Before the Pastors semion, I announced for her to come
up, she did, and then with a small voice she began to
sing...."I am so glad that our Father in heaven tells of his
love in the book he has given, wonderful things in the Bible
I see. This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me...I am so glad
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me. Jesus loves me. I am so
glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me
And let me tell you, there was not a dry eye in the place.
Now, the thing is, not known to me earlier, this little girl
was blind. I never noticed when she spoke to me. She was
just polite, went back to her Mother like any other child.
She continued with the entire song, and when she repeated
the chorus of," I am so glad that Jesus love me..."folks
started coming to the altar as it filled up, I was filled with
the holy spirit and began to pray as I continued to sing, as
she finished. It was a night I will never forget.
God says, "a little child shall lead them." And children
do. We all need to go back to our "child-like faith" and see
things through the eyes of a child.
Jesus loves even me, was written by Phillip Bliss. Philip
had attended a worship service in which the song, “Oh,
How I Love Jesus” had been sung over and over again.
Philip had nothing against that hymn, but he thought to
himself, Haven’t I been singing enough about my poor
love for Jesus? Shouldn’t I rather sing of His great love for
me? Then, thinking about Romans 5:5, which speaks of
how dearly God loves us, he wrote, “Jesus loves even me”.
A few years later, he received all the reward he needed
for this hymn. A woman in Scotland told him how God had
used this hymn to win her husband to Christ. Her 3-year-
old daughter couldn’t remember many of the actual words
to the song, but she remembered the line: “Jesus loves even
me”. The mother had tried to get her husband to attend an
evangelistic meeting, but he refused. Then one day, when
he came home from work, he was met by his little girl. He
picked her up, and she threw her arms around him, saying,
“Daddy, Jesus loves even me!” Then she said, “And Daddy,
Jesus loves even you!” The father was touched by those
simple words. He attended the meetings with his wife and
daughter, and gave his life to Jesus.
Yes... Jesus loved even him and he loves, even you.
And...a child shall lead them.
I am so glad that our Father in Heav’n tells of His love
in the Book He has giv ’n;
wonderful things in the Bible I see, this is the dearest,
that Jesus loves me.
Refrain
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me, Jesus
loves me.
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me.
Though I forget Him, and wander away, still He doth
love me wherever I stray;
back to His dear loving arms I do flee, when I remember
that Jesus loves me.
Oh, if there’s only one song I can sing, when in His
beauty I see the great King,
this shall my song through eternity be, “Oh, what a
wonder that Jesus loves me!”
Jesus loves me, and I know I love Him; love brought
Him down my poor soul to redeem;
yes, it was love made Him die on the tree; oh, I am
certain that Jesus loves me.
If one should ask of me, how can I tell? Glory to Jesus,
I know very well!
God’s Holy Spirit with mine doth agree, constantly
witnessing Jesus loves me.
In this assurance I find sweetest rest, trusting in Jesus,
I know I am blessed;
Satan, dismayed, from my soul now doth flee, when I
just tell him that Jesus loves me.
Phillip Bliss
