The Regular Season Ends
Basketball has come to a screeching halt as a busy week caps off the end of the regular
season. The War Eagles and Lady War Eagles sprinted down the stretch with three games
in four days to finish off a busy regular season. Unfortunately, after the boys and girls teams
picked up wins on Tuesday and Wednesday at home, they ran into a lively sold-out crowd
in Portal as both teams fell short. Tickets for the Portal/Jenkins County game went on sale
Thursday morning at 8:00 AM and within hours the 700 allotted tickets were gone!
This past week, the boys’ team defeated Savannah Classical Academy 89-28n and a close
victory over McIntosh County Academy 60-52. Friday night was the much-anticipated
rematch with Portal. At Jenkins County, the War Eagles narrowly lost by three points to the
top team in the state, but it was all Portal on Friday night in their gym. After the first quarter,
the game was close with the Panthers on top 14-10; however, the second quarter was the
dagger. Portal outscored Jenkins 25-6 to take a bug 39-16 lead. The war Eagles continued to
fight but Portal came out on top in the end with a final score of 70-42.
The Lady War Eagles started their week with a win over New Hampstead, winning 51-44
and they defeated McIntosh County Academy 43-31. Friday night was a rematch of a very
close game just a couple of weeks ago at Jenkins County. It was in Jenkins County that the
War Eagles trailed until the final seconds, and they came out victorious. This time looked
like a similar storyline. The game was tied at halftime 27-27. At the end of the 3rd quarter
Portal had gained a four-point lead.
Portal was able to gain an eight point lead, but the Lady War Eagles would fight back as
they have so many times this season. At one point, after a Shanya Lake basket, the Lady War
Eagles cut the lead to two. However, with good free throw shooting the Portal pulled out a
49-44 win to get revenge on their home court.
Next up for the two teams will be regional playoffs, followed by what is hoped to be a
long run through the state playoffs. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams will play in the state
playoffs; their seeding will be determined by how well they do. The top 4 teams in each
regional playoffs advance to the state playoffs. The top two finishing teams will host the
state playoffs, the 3rd and 4th place teams will be on the road.
The regional playoffs will have the following format for the tournament for the boys’ and
girls’ teams, but please note as of writing this article the final scores for some games have
not been released from Saturday night’s games. These are the projected games based on
standings. However, what is certain is that the first round for the girls will be on Thursday
at 4:00 PM against Portal. Jenkins County girls will be the number 2 seed in the regional
playoffs. The boys’ team will most likely be playing McIntosh County Academy on Thursday
night at 5:30 if the games play out like the regular season. The championship round will be
played on Friday night with the girls tipping off at 7:00 and the boys at 8:30.
All tickets will be sold on Go Fan and tickets will not be available at the gate. Tickets
must be purchased in advance. Tickets will cost $12, and they will get you into every game
for that particular day. A different pass must be bought for each day. The following link will
take you to the main Go Fan page for Montgomery County Athletics. Click on the day and
sport in which you are attending. https://gofan.co/app/school/GA11894. You can also scan

Burke County Sheriff asks for
neighboring communities' help
The Burke County Sheriff's Office and the Waynesboro Police Department are
asking for the public's assistance in identifying a truck involved in a hit and run
Friday afternoon around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sixth Street and Liberty
Street, at the old courthouse. Citizens and business owners have contributed to a
cash award in the amount of $2500 for the identification and arrest of the perpetrator.
The vehicle has been identified as a 2008-2013 Chevrolet truck, black, 4 door with
a black camper shell. “The truck may have some damage to the front-end and
passenger side,” explained Sheriff Alphonso Williams. The victims, an adult male
and three young children were crossing the street when they were struck, said
Sheriff Williams. “We are urging anyone with information about the black Chevrolet
truck or the driver to come forward and contact the Burke County Sheriff’s Office
at 706-554-2133 or any law enforcement agency in the jurisdiction of the truck or
the driver. GSP is handling the investigation and Deputies with the Burke County
Sheriff's Office are out assisting by canvassing businesses and other areas looking
for any available surveillance video,” Williams explained.

Reading a
thousand
books before
kindergarten?
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early-literacy
initiative designed to help get kids reading and enjoying
books in order to give them a head start on school, and
to show them that reading is fun. It’s pretty simple, and
not as scary as it sounds when you think about a thousand
books. In fact, if you read your child only a single book
at bedtime every night starting when they are babies, your
child will reach the goal in less than three years. Let them
readjust three books a day, and they’ll be done in less than
a year! You can even repeat favorite books and they still
count towards that one thousand book goal.
If you and your child would like to participate in the
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge, there’s two
easy ways to do it. One would be to come into the library
and fill out the simple application form, and the other is
to go to the library’s Beanstack page at sjrls.beanstack.
com and sign up there. (We recommend the Beanstack
page - not only is it easy to keep track on the go using the
Beanstack app, but your child can earn Beanstack badges
as they go along!) Your child will receive a bookbag with
a badge book, a Book Buddy stuffed toy, and other fun and
useful things when you sign up for 1,000 Books Before
Kindergarten. We’ll give it to you immediately if you
sign up in the library, or during your next library visit if
you sign up with Beanstack - just ask for it at the desk!
Either way, you’ll know that your little one will not only
be having a lot of fun reading or listening to books, but
will be developing their reading skills doing it. Babies,
toddlers, and children too young for kindergarten (0 to 5
years old) are eligible to participate.
