Under the
Bleachers
The Super Bowl is presently in the 2nd quarter as I peek
out from under the bleachers. The game is 10-0 in favor of
the 49ers, but there is a lot of playing time left. I have yet to
watch more than 3-4 minutes of the game, but it does not appear I have missed too
much. I have watched some interesting commercials; I am not sure they are worthy
of the 23 million dollars that it costs for a 30-second ad.
I have watched very little of the Super Bowl, but I did research the amount of
money that is spent during the Super Bowl. Ads will bring a total estimated revenue
of 700 million, and as mentioned companies will spend 23 million per 30 seconds.
It is estimated that Americans will spend 23 billion, yes billion is placing bets on the
Super Bowl. An additional 17.3 billion will be spent on apparel, food, decorations,
drinks, etc. The average cost of a ticket and that is a cheap seat, is over $10,000.
Lower-level seats are going for just over $80,000.
These are just a few of the numbers that left me somewhat shocked. They say
we are in an economic crisis, maybe it is more of a spending crisis. I am not here to
argue politics, or talk economics but at times I think, “We have lost our minds!” I am
certain we have. Maybe the old saying is true, “We will entertain ourselves to death”
We love our sports, and we love our entertainment.
Since I am sounding like an old man complaining about the cost of stuff, like,
“Back in my day we could go to the movies for $1,” I will go back under the bleachers
and see what else is going on.
On the positive side of sports, spring sports are underway in Jenkins County.
Aside, from baseball, the tennis teams are playing. The boys’ and girls’ War Eagles
tennis teams defeated Jefferson County in a sweep. Then they traveled to East
Laurens where both teams lost on Thursday.
Boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will be off and running soon. We should
see many medals coming from these teams again this year even on the state level.
Coach Hil Johnson will have his team ready.
Middle School spring sports will be coming up soon as well. The young War
Eagles will look to build for the future while winning in the present.
All of this said to say, War Eagles spring sports will not cost you 10,000 for a ticket.
If the average cost of a War Eagle game was $7, you could attend 1428 games
before you spent $10,000. Some activities are free! I can promise you one thing,
War Eagles players will appreciate your attendance at their events far more than
any player in the Super Bowl will appreciate you. I think this is perspective for us
all, or I hope it is!
This is my rant from under the bleachers. I will just enjoy my seat at the Super
Bowl, in a chair by the television. I will get to bed early and may not even watch the
whole Super Bowl. I may just be getting old. And you as the readers are probably
thinking, “The sports editor is turning into a grouchy old man.” Maybe so, I will let
you decide. For now, I will just take my seat “under the bleachers.”
