The Jenkins County Times
j enkinsc ountytimes .com
Saw mills were a
booming business
One of the largest industries which made huge
contributions to the area of Jenkins County was the
saw mill business at one time or another. Saw mills
were located throughout Jenkins County. Among
them were, Edenfield saw mill, Frye and Wasden,
Millen Lumber Company, and Turner Lumber
Company. A large number of naval store operations
were also in existence. Along with a paddle wheel
boat that would bring in goods to Millen.
Millen's economy depended on these types of
businesses until around 1940, when the Thomson
Company opened in Millen to be followed in 1951
by Jockey International. Then in i960, a plant by
the name of Rusco Industries Inc. opened. And then
in 1967 another industry by the name of Brigadier
opened. This type of industries gave the city of
Millen a more balanced economy between industry
and agriculture.
Diary became a large industry in the early forties
along with the egg market in the mid-forties, which
in itself created another source of income for the
farmers of the area. Most all of these industries
have since closed or moved on. But, at one time or
another, the county was a big place for business and
housed more citizens than we do today. Downtown
was booming with crowds and trains were coming
and going with passenger trains and deliveries on
a daily basis. I am sure we all miss those days for
sure.

Bailee Boo loves suckers too
Hello everyone! It’s me Winston! This week, do I
have a story for you? This is about my friend Bailee
Boo. (Love the name!) Hope you enjoy!
You see, Bailee Boo is a golden retriever, black lab
and German shepherd mix. And she loves lollipops.
One day, she went with her family in the SUV, when
they had decided to run to the store for something
and while they went in to shop, they left her in
the car while it was running. One of the kids
had brought a bunch of those natural flavored
strawberry suckers. You know the ones!
When they all returned to the car, they heard this
sucking noise in the back seat. They looked and there
was Bailee Boo with a sucker hanging out of her
mouth. She was sucking so hard on that lollipop, that
the juice was running down the side of her mouth as
fast as it would go. Not only did she have one in her
mouth. There were several empty sticks in the floor
that had been finished. The family said they laughed
so hard, seeing her with one of those pops hanging
out of her mouth. She simply loves lollipops so much.
She looks forward to halloween more and more every
year for her own basket filled with lollipops.
Bailee is a very special dog to this family. She loves
to lie upside down and smile. She shakes both paws,
high fives, sits pretty and then sneezes loud. But,
more than anything, she loves her lollipops. They
have just learned to keep them up high and out of
reach. (Most of the time, that is)
You, go, Bailee Boo!
I’ll see you all next week with another great story!

I carry your heart with me
BY E. E. CUMMINGS
I carry your heart with me (I carry it in
my heart) I am never without it (anywhere
I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
I fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(Here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life, which
grows
higher than soul can hope, or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)
