Derina Harvey leads the award-winning Celtic Rock
group, the Derina Harvey Band (dHb). With a show
that offers a fresh take on traditional folk songs as well
as a few originals, Derina’s vibrant personality takes
center stage with humour, storytelling, and, of course,
her powerful vocals. The band has been likened to a
“rockier” version of Canada’s Great Big Sea, if fronted by
Adele, and has earned a reputation as a high-energy live
show that leaves many an audience out-of-breath and
hollering from their seats!
This will be a captivating night of telling stories
through song and just plain old funny stories from the
real life experiences of the lead singer, Derina. The
band has covered a fair amount of Canada along with
arts and festival circuits and is now poised to do the
same in the United States. They were very well-received
at four juried US showcases, Western Arts Alliance,
Performing Arts Exchange, Ohio Arts Professionals
Network and following these, the band has quickly
begun to make inroads from coast to coast in the US.
The group enjoyed a huge wave of new online followers
from across the globe via TikTok, where there was a sea
shanty craze that started in 2020. dHb’s recording of
Tom Lewis’s “The Last Shanty” was used in thousands
of videos on the platform, introducing the band to a
whole new generation of listeners. Derina Harvey of
the band says, "we are looking forward to meeting the
great folks of Millen, Georgia and giving them all a great
show....ya'll come on out and join us."
The band released a new full-length album titled
“Waves of Home” on June 23rd, 2023. Their dedication
to touring across Canada has not gone unnoticed
in their home region of Atlantic Canada - they are
nominated for a 2024 East Coast Music Award in the
"Fans' Choice and "Entertainer of the Year” categories.
I have heard the band in person. Let me tell you, this
is a night you do not want to miss. Jenkins County is
so very lucky to have this band in the area. An award
winning band that is known all across Canada, Europe,
and The USA. Everyone is invited to join your neighbors
at the Historic Pal Theatre for a Saint Patrick's Day you
will never forget.

Dr. Hearn emphasized the significance of providing
the best security infrastructure for the students and
staff of JCSS. The Avigilon system is renowned for
its effectiveness and reliability, making it a preferred
choice for various high-profile organizations.
"With the installation of this system, we will be on
the cutting edge of security technology," stated
Dr. Hearn. He explained to the board that the
system's capability for automatic downloads every
6-7 years will ensure that it remains current and
up to date. This feature is expected to alleviate the
need for frequent system replacements, thereby
optimizing the longevity and efficiency of the security
infrastructure.
The decision to invest in advanced security measures
reflects the commitment of the Jenkins County Board
of Education to prioritize the safety and well-being
of students, faculty, and staff. As school security
continues to be a paramount concern, the installation
of the Avigilon system is a proactive step towards
fortifying the protective measures in place within the
school district.
The grant approval marks a significant achievement
for JCSS, showcasing the success of proactive efforts
to secure additional resources for the betterment
of the educational community. The Jenkins
County Board of Education looks forward to the
implementation of the Avigilon security system and
the positive impact it will have on the overall safety
and security of the school district. The total cost of
the system will be $253,000.

Living, he loved me,
dying, he saved me.
One day back in the seventies while preaching a
service at a little Church up in the North Georgia
mountains, I came across a family that was simply
down on their luck.
While on my way up the mountain, I stopped in to a
little store called, Froggie's General Store, (j remember
the name, because it was so unusual) Froggie's was a
very small store, similar to that of the little store on the
familiar television show, The Walton's. You know the
one, the door was old, it squeeked when you entered,
there was an old cola case that had the old sliding doors
you would open, reach in and grab a cold bottleacoke
out of, and of course the round block of cheese that sat
on a large wooden block. To me, it was like going way
back in time. But, I really liked it. First thing I saw, was
a cold bottled Royal Cola (RC) and above it on a shelf
was a good old chocolate moon pie, and I grabbed one.
You know, there is nothing better than a RC cola and a
moon pie!
As I was buying my purchases, I noticed a couple
with two young children with no shoes, dirty clothing,
and looking rather hungry. I then felt led to buy them
all a RC ana a moon pie. They seemed grateful, I then
asked them to come to the services at the Church on
the Mountain and they said they would try. However, I
wasn't sure. But, I did what I was suppose to do, then
went on about my ride up the mountain.
After making it up the mountain (which, by the way,
is not my favorite thing to do) I was greeted by a large
crowd of great folks awaiting my arrival in front of the
small brown building.
It was just as I had thought, a group of mountain folk
waiting to show me around the Church and to have
lunch. Well, lunch was another story. I will just say, yes,
squirrl was on the menu!
Later on that evening, began what they called, a two
day mountian revival. I was the preacher. Yes! little ole
me!
The Church was full. I would guess around about
100 folk attended with a choir of about 20 with a piano,
organ, banjo, guitars, fiddle (yes! I said fiddle!), a jug
player (oh my!), and someone on spoons (I think that
is what those were). We began to sing the old familar
hymns, like, I'll fly away, Amazing Grace, Sweet by and
by, and you know, all the favorites. And boy, they could
sing! To the top of the rafters and top of the heavens
they sang for about and hour. Then before I would
preach, they had a gentlemen that seemed to be in his
twenties or so come forward and sing, "Living, he loved
me, dying, he saved me", the old familar hymn, we all
know.
I have to say, it was beautiful. I am not sure what I
was expecting. I guess, just like all the rest of the music,
something very uh, whatyou might call, "hillbilly". But,
it was nothinglike that. This guy, was great! He was as
close to professional as he could be. I was impressed
so much, that after he finished, I got up and asked him
to sing the last verse again, and acutalfy changed part
of my sermon to preach on this exact topic. "Living, he
loved you, dying he saved you, and he still loves you
today." It always amazes me how God changes our
messages in special circumstances and even gives us the
words.
After my sermon, I noticed in the very back of the
Church, the family that I had met in Froggie's store
was there, and all of them were coming, forward. They
asked for prayer and the two younger children asked
to be saved. The Church family embraced them, was
able to get them some clothes/shoes and from what I
understand, they became a part of that Church family.
It was truly a wonderful trip and wonderful day!
This hymn was written by Wilbur Chapman. He was
born in 1859. Chapman was best known for this hymn
along with others including, "Jesus, what a friend for
sinners".
He wrote this hymn from experiences in his personal
life. At the age of 51, he had gone through his share of
heartaches. His first two wives and a son died within a
period of about 20 years, leaving him alone with four
children. Yet his persistant focus on Christ, led many
to come to Christ. Over his ministry, he had over 13
breakdowns with his health and was eventually laid up
later in his life until his death in 1918.
Please sing with me, or read the words. I pray that
you will remember, living he loved you, and dy
saved you
dying he

One day when heaven was filled with His praises,
One day when sin was as black as could be,
Jesus came forth to be born of a virain-
~ ’■ 1 ‘; He!
Dwelt among men, nuj example is He!
Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me;
Buried, He carried my sins far away;
Rising, He justified freely forever:
One day He’s coming—O glorious day!
One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain,
One day they nailed Him to die on the tree;
Suffering anguish, despised and rejected;
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He.
One day they left Him alone in the garden,
One day He rested, from suffering free;
Angels came down o’er His tomb to keep vigil;
Hope of the hopeless, my Savior is He.
One day the grave could conceal Him no longer,
One day the stone rolled away from the door-
Then He arose, over death He had conquered;
Now is ascended, my Lord evermore.
One dau the trumpet will sound for His coming,
One day the skies with His glory will shine;
Wonderfid day, my beloved ones bringing;
Glorious Savior, this Jesus is mine!
Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not
lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge
him, and he will make straight your paths."
