SCAM
Continued from page 1
DD214 Direct allegedly promises veterans an emailed or hard copy of their
paperwork after charging the specified fees. However, reports have surfaced
indicating that veterans have been charged more than initially promised, received
incorrect copies, or, in some cases, never received any documentation at all.
The Clerk of Superior Court emphasized the importance of filing military
discharge records with the Clerk's Office in the county of residency. These records
are crucial for veterans and their families, providing permanent access to vital
information. It is also highlighted that these records are exempt from the Open
Records Act for 50 years from the date of filing.
To counteract the scam, Herrington encouraged veterans to utilize the free
services provided by the Clerk's Office. Filing and obtaining copies of discharge
certificates can be done swiftly, usually taking around 15 minutes. Veterans
are urged to contact the Clerk's Office at (478) 982-4683 during regular office
hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., for any questions or
concerns.
The Clerk of Superior Court's actions align with Georgia law, specifically O.C.G.A.
5 15-6-78(3), which explicitly prohibits charging veterans fees for recording
discharge certificates. This legal provision reinforces the commitment to
supporting veterans and ensuring they are not exploited for essential services
related to their military records.
The Clerk's Office expressed gratitude for the service and dedication of veterans,
urging them to be vigilant against potential scams and reassuring the community
that they are committed to protecting the rights and well-being of those who have
served.

Spring is almost here!
The first official day of spring is Tuesday, March 19, but here in Georgia we
need to get those gardens growing before the heat really arrives. Come to the
library and check out our amazing collection of gardening books, many of them
donated by local garden clubs. They’ll give you a great idea of what different
plants need, what grows well in our area, and so much more.
This is also a great time of year to go visit our state parks as well. The flowers
are beginning to bloom, the babies will start being born, and the weather is lovely.
Stop by the library and check out the Georgia State Parks Family Pass, and while
you’re here, check out the State Park Backpack Kit too! That will help you observe
and identify all sorts of amazing animals, beautiful birds and butterflies, and
wonderful trees and wildflowers.
Do you know the single best way to help a baby or child become a good reader
is to read them stories and encourage them to read for themselves at a young
age? That’s the idea behind 1000 Books Before Kindergarten! This program is
designed to encourage bonding between parents and children through reading,
and helps get your little one ready for kindergarten. Even better, for every 50
books that your child reads before they enroll in kindergarten (or every book they
read 50 times before kindergarten), they can get a free book to keep! To find out
more, enroll your child on Beanstack at sjrls.beanstack.com or stop by the library.
Every child who is enrolled in 1000 Books Before Kindergarten will be given a
bookbag with goodies inside, plus a stuffed Book Buddy toy!
For the kids who are a little older, check out the Beanstack-only Smokey Bear
challenge! It’s a celebration of 80 years of Smokey Bear, and it’s pretty easy and
fun to do. Join in on the fun at sjrls.beanstack.com and remember - only you can
prevent forest fires!
Well, that’s all for now - see you at the library!
Millen Woman’s
Club Shines a
Spotlight on
Sherri Adams
-Jessica Suggs, Special Contributor
My first meeting with the February Spotlight was
just a couple-wink wink- years ago when I was a
little girl. I was at a Halloween party and she was
dressed as Donald Duck. I was in awe and decided
right away that she was my new best friend. She
has since retired Donald Duck but has remained a
close friend over the years. I’m proud to introduce
to you The Millen Woman’s Club Spotlight for February Sherri Adams.
Sherri is a lifelong resident of Jenkins County. She was born at Mulkey Hospital.
She has spent her school years in the Jenkins County School Systems and
graduated in 1988 with her High School Diploma. After high school, she attended
Swainsboro Technical College where she majored in Medical Terminology and
Business.
Sherri is very active in the community. She has been a member of the Millen
Rotary Club since November of 2021 and currently serves as the President of the
club.
Sherri has been member of the Millen Woman’s Club since 2017-she’s not quite
sure on that but will check and get back to us. Sherri is also active in her church.
She is member of Connections Church of Millen. She encourages everyone that
does not have a home church to come out and visit.
Sherri went to work at PruittHealth Bethany since 1988. Bethany Home has been
Sherri’s only job since VOT in high school. Sherri loves her job and the residents
there. The older generation inspires her and when she sees a smile on their face, it
completes her day!
Sherri has been married a lot of years to Jeff Adams. The lovebirds tied the knot
in August of 1989. They have twin girls, Brittany Bird and Breanna Chance both
32. The most important things about her girls are they each have 2 children of
their own. Sherri has 4 grandchildren, best described as the other half of her
heart, Breely 6, Blake 2, Bennett 6 and Anna Blais 2. Sherri loves surrounding
herself with family and friends. Her biggest love, other than playing with her
grandchildren, is a nap!
A top-secret fact about Sherri is that she is actually a bodybuilder-she just hides it
well under her clothes!!
