Well, I have found the best place in the Mountains
to go camping and fishing. It is called "Mountain
View Campground", located at 4157 Swallows Creek
Road in Hiawassee, GA.
Here is a little history of the place. The Owners,
Thomas and Elsie Harvey retired to Hiawassee in
1977 after raising their 3 children in Stockbridge, Ga.
Thomas, a WWIIVetwenttoworkfortheCCCsafterthe
war. He helped develop Vogel State Park in Blairsville,
GA and always wanted to settle in the North Georgia
Mountains and run his own campground. He and
Elsie bought an old farmhouse, built sometime in the
1800’s, and some land and turned the property into
Mountain View Campground. Taking advantage of
the quiet neighborhood surrounding the campground
and gorgeous backdrop of Swallows Creek Wildlife
Reserve, the park needed few amenities. Families
loved the simplicity of the space and the unbridled
hospitality of Tom and Elsie.
In 1983, the couple’s two grandsons, Wyatt & Matt,
came to live with them. Tom and Elsie encouraged
their grandsons to learn the popular mountain
activity of clog-dancing and built a Music Barn on
the property so the boys could entertain campers
and locals with their twin fiddles and harmonies. The

Speaker Burns
Recognizes
UGA Five
"Very friendly and fast service....
folks here are as friendly as they come.'
• "Our promise is a quality-driven service,
and our focus is to ensure affordable
access to the medications you need at a
price you will love."
Speaker Jon Burns recently recognized the five UGA
students that provided aid to the passengers of a wreck
that occurred in the afternoon hours of March 16.
Further investigation revealed the bravery the UGA
students displayed. The young ladies witnessed the
accident while enroute from Athens to Savannah;
they waded into the water to come to the aid of the
trapped occupants of the submerged vehicle.
“We are honored to recognize the tremendous
heroism, teamwork and bravery of these five
University of Georgia students for saving the lives
of two young children recently in Southeast Georgia.
God bless them!” Speaker Jon Burns expressed.

Music Barn also provided a gathering place for Tom &
Elsie’s Fish Frys and BBQs.
When Elsie died in October 2002, the campground
was full of campers most of whom had been regular
campers for years. The wonderful support of Tom’s
camping community was a testament to the love and
respect that the couple had cultivated throughout
the years. Tom continued to run Mountain View
Campground until he died in 2013 at the age of 91.
Now, I will say that this campground is one of the
best. If you are planning a get away soon, this is the
place to go. Camping is great, the view is tremendous
and the hiking is grand.
Mountain View is primarily an adult oriented
campground with the majority of campeers in their
late 30’s upwards to their 8o’s. They love kids, and I
have seen some with their parents, but the amenities
are geared toward adults. Of course if your child likes
to fish and hike, it will be right up their alley.
Also, one of my favoirte amenities is the dog run.
The dogs love to go with us and they don’t have to be
leashed all the time as long as they are in the dog run.
They also offer Karaoke in the music barn when there
is not entertainment booked. You will love this place!
We did!
See ya next week!
