Georgia Lawmakers Demand
Action on Postal Service Delays
Delays could impact upcoming election season
-Joe Brady, Editor
A group of Georgia's
congressional representatives,
led by Congressman Hank
Johnson, is intensifying
pressure on the United States
Postal Service (USPS) to
address persistent mail delays
in the state which have sparked
widespread concern among
constituents, particularly
regarding the timely receipt of
absentee ballots.
The issue came to the
forefront when constituents
reported not receiving their
absentee ballots for a recent election, a problem that Congressman Johnson described as both
"ridiculous" and deeply upsetting. Despite assurances given, the aftermath of the election revealed a
significant number of voters were disenfranchised due to delayed ballot delivery.
Investigations into the source of these delays point to operational challenges at the USPS
Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Palmetto, which was inaugurated earlier this year

Jenkins County Players’
Legacy Lives On
Through Generous Donation to Local High
School Band
-Joe Brady, Editor
In a heartwarming act of community support and dedication to the arts,
the Jenkins County Players announced their disbandment. But the group
is set to leave a legacy through a significant financial contribution to the
Jenkins County High School (JCHS) band.
The group will be donating over $3,000, accumulated from ticket
sales to the high school's band program. Sam Eades, a respected local
business owner who founded the Jenkins County Players, shared that the
funds were originally kept in the Chamber of Commerce bank account
for safekeeping, at the request of Mandy Underwood, the Chamber of
Commerce Director. Eades has since requested the disbursement of these
funds to the JCHS band, in recognition of their continuous support for
the arts in Jenkins County.
"The Players was bom out of my love for the arts and my love for
Jenkins County," Eades said, reflecting on the group's inception and
mission. Despite stepping away from producing shows at the local Pal
Theater, Eades remains committed to the arts, hinting at future endeavors
in drama that could potentially bring more artistic ventures to Millen.
The decision to support the JCHS band with the remaining funds
is seen as a fitting homage to the significant role the band has played
in nurturing the arts within the community. This gesture not only
underscores the importance of arts education but also highlights the
impact local arts organizations can have on young artists and their
communities.
As of now, it remains uncertain when the official presentation of the
check to JCHS band director, Jim McBride, will take place. Attempts
to reach Mandy Underwood for detailed comment on the scheduled
presentation have yet to receive a response. To Mr. Eades’ request
Underwood responded via email on April 2, 2024; “request received.”
The community and supporters of the arts eagerly anticipate the formal
transfer of funds, which promises to bolster the JCHS band's activities
and further enrich the cultural landscape of Jenkins County.
The Jenkins County Players may be closing a chapter, but their
commitment to the arts and the community of Millen continues to inspire
and make a difference, ensuring that their legacy will resonate for years
to come.
