When I was eighteen years of age, I worked in a
nursing home as a activity director. Now, this was not
my full time job, it was one of my part time jobs along
with a music director job at a local Church.
While most eighteen year olds were preparing for
college or out with friends "living it up", I was doing
something that I loved, working with older folk in a
home for what I referred to a "older youth center".
We had so much fun. We planted gardens together,
we had activity time, making crafts, etc. We also had
a kitchen for our ladies and men too, to be able to
cook for each other. It just gave all of them something
to do, besides sit and be alone.
It was one of the highlights of my life, in which I
will cherish. There in the nursing home was a dear
lady of around eighty years old that would sit in a
rocking chair all day and sing. I was told she had
alzheimer's. She did not remember her family (even
though they visited her every other day), she did
not remember her name, or even where she was
from. However, she did remember hymns from her
childhood. She also would smile at everyone who
would walk by, and then continue to sing her hymns.
One of her favorites was a very old hymn by the
name of, "Come, all ye souls by sin oppressed". You
see, I could tell it was her favorite, because she would
sing it louder than any other one. And, when she sang
the chorus, she let it rip.
By the way, her name was Miss Clara. That is how
I knew her. And she was a very special lady. She
touched my life and that of many others.
Sadly, Miss Clara died a few years later, but left
a legacy of singing that will ring throughout that
nursing home for many many years.
"Come, all ye souls by sin opressed", which you may
know as, "Only trust him", was written by John H.
Stockton n 1869.
John was raised as a Presbyterian and converted
to Methodism in a camp at the age of 21. He became
a licensed minister in 1857, but his ministry was cut
short by illness in 1874 and his death in 1877.
Of the many hymns which he's said to have written,
this is the only one that has continued in use today.
The original refrain of his 1874 song of invitation was,
"Come to Jesus, come to Jesus, Come to Jesus now;
He will save you, He will save you, He will save you
now." Somewhat different of what we see now, with
"only trust him, now.
This was changed by Ira Sankey later on in years.
While this hymn was written for revival services
which seldom are held today, its message is still clear
and relevant today. The Lord still calls those by sin
oppressed and with His mercy He will save. Today
He is the only one with the power to do this. Yes, He
will save you, He will save you, He will save you now.
Have you answered His call like Miss Clara did?
Thank you Miss Clara for giving me a great memory
and a great story to tell.
Sing with me....
1. Come, eve-iry soul by sin op-ipressed;
There’s mer-icy with the Lord,
And He will sure-ily give you rest
By trust-iing in His Word.
Refrain
Only trust Him, on-ily trust Him,
Only trust Him now;
He will save you, He will save you,
He wiu save you now.
2. For Je-isus shed His pre-idous blood
Rich bless-iings to be-istow;
Plunge now in-ito the crim-isonflood
That wcish-ies white as snow.
Refrain
3. Yes, Je-isus is the truth, the way,
That leads you into rest;
Believe in Him with-iout de-ilay
And you areful-ily blessed.
Refrain
4. Come, then, and join this ho-ily band,
And on to glo-iry go
To dwell in that ce-iles-iti-ial land
Where joys im-imor-italflow.
Refrain
4. OJe-isus, bless-1 erf Je-1 sus, dear,
I’m com-iing now to Thee;
Since Thou hast made the way so clear
And full sal-iva-itionfree.
