Do you give your best at everything you do? Do you give
200% or more?
These are the questions I have been asked all of my life.
Of course, if you ask any of my friends or my children,
they will say, "he does, he gives way too much sometimes."
What is too much? Is too much, the time you spend
helping your older Mother or Father with household
chores that they no longer can do? Is too much, the time
you spend with your children on a Saturday night, when
you would rather be watching the game or going out with
friends? Or, is way too much, the time you spend at work
earning a living?
Way too much, can mean many things to each person.
But, the real question is, what do you give to the master?
Yes, I am talking about the Lord.
Second Timothy, chapter 2, verse 15 says, " Do your best
to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who
has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of
truth."
Now, I have to say, my children could be right. I do feel
as if sometimes I do things I wouldn't normally do or I may
just keep going and going until I feel exhausted.
But, what I do know, is that the Lord will take care of me
and keep me in his care as long as I am doing things that
are pleasing in his sight. And believe me, he does just that.
This is why I love the hymn, "Give your best to the
Master". This hymn
was written by
Howard Benjamin
Grose in 1901, who
was born at Millerton,
NY, on Sept., 5,1851,
the son of Henry
Laurenz and Emma
Louisa Seward Grose.
He wrote the hymn to
fit an already existing |
tune composed in
1864 by Charlotte
Arlington Barnard.
Grose was educated
at the University of
Chicago, from which
he received the A.B.
Degree in 1876, and
the University of
Rochester, from
which he received the
A.M. degree in :l88 0 . Howard Benjamin Grose
He, like his father
before him, became a
Baptist minister in 1883. From 1883 to 1887, he served the
First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie, NY, and from 1888
to 1890, the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh, PA.
Grose then became President of the State University of
South Dakota from 1890 to 1892, after which he served
as recorder and assistant professor of history at the
University of Chicago from 1892 to 1896.
You can tell by the lyrics that Howard either was
struggling with giving his best or maybe was just pondering
the question. As a Pastor, I am sure he was thinking about
putting on the full armor of God quite often. You can see in
the chorus, he says, "give of your best to the Master; give
Him strength of your youth. Clad ( used to describe the
way someone is dressed)in the salvation’s full armor, join
in the battle for truth.
In verse one, we are told the "what" of giving our best
to Jesus. In verse two, we are told the "how" of giving our
best to Jesus. And, in verse three we are told the "why" of
giving our best to Jesus. The chorus repeats the basic
thought of the opening lines of this song of consecration
and devotion. Sing with me
1. Give of your best to the Master;
Give of the strength of your youth;
Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor
Into the battle for truth.
Jesus has set the example,
Dauntless was He, young and brave;
Give Him your loyal devotion;
Give Him the best that you have.
Refrain:
Give of your best to the Master;
Give of the strength of your youth;
Clad in salvation’s full armor,
Join in the battle for truth.
2. Give of your best to the Master;
Give Him first place in your heart;
Give Him first place in your service;
Consecrate every part.
Give, and to you will be given;
God His beloved Son gave;
Gratefully seeking to serve Him,
Give Him the best that you have.
3. Give of your best to the Master;
Naught else is worthy His love;
He gave Himself for your ransom,
Gave up His glory above.
Laid down His life without murmur,
You from sin’s ruin to save;
Give Him your heart’s adoration,
Give Him the best that you have.
