A Seed From
The Sower
-Michael Guido
Have you ever
thought about the
value of a penny?
This husband and wife were invited to spend the
weekend at the husband’s boss’ home. The wife was
nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy
with a fine home on the waterway and cars costing more
than her house! The first day and evening went well, and
she was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the
wealthy live. The husband’s boss was quite generous as a
host and took them to the finest restaurants.
The wife knew she would never have the opportunity
to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so she was
enjoying herself immensely. As the three of them were
about to enter this fancy restaurant one evening, the boss
was walking slightly ahead of her and her husband. He
stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for
a long, silent moment. The wife wondered if she was
supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground
except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped
and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down
and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled and
then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure.
How absurd! What need did this man have for a single
penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it
up? Throughout dinner, that penny nagged at her.
Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually
mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection
and asked if the penny he found had been of some value.
A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his
pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had
seen pennies before! What was the point of this? “Look at
it,” he said. “Read what it says.” She read the words “United
States of America”. “No, not that; read further.” “One cent?”
“No, keep reading.” “In God we trust?” “Yes!” “And?” “And
if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin.
Whenever I find a coin, I see that inscription.
It is written on every single United States coin, but we
never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front
of me telling me to trust him. Who am I to pass it by? When
I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that
moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do
trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it
were gold. I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation
with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are
plentiful!”
The next time you see a penny on the ground, pick
it up. It could be God sending you a message to trust
in Him!

“My Voice”
”My sheep hear my voice, and I
know them, and they follow me.“ -
John 10 27ESV
I took Jude to the dentist last week to have
some work done. While the dentist and her
assistant were working on Jude, he became
so relaxed that he fell asleep. These two sweet,
gentle ladies were trying to wake him up softly,
but he wouldn’t wake up. While I was sitting
in the corner of the room, reading my book, I
realized what they were trying to do. With my
firm, strong dad voice I called out, “Jude, wake
up!” He immediately raised his head up and said,
“What is it, Dad?”
This scene made me think about the scripture
where Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice.”
When Jesus speaks to His sheep, His voice is
clearly heard over the voices of others. When
Jesus speaks to His sheep, they wake up. When
Jesus speaks to His sheep, they follow Him!
Have you heard the voice of Jesus lately?
When I met my mentor, I was a 15-year-old
student at youth camp, and he was a counselor.
He didn’t know me from Adam, but he walked
up to me anyway and asked me a question that
changed the course of my life. He asked me this
question, “What is the Lord doing in your life?”
I hated that question because I didn’t have a
good answer to it. I didn’t have a good answer
to it, because I had not been spending any time
listening to His voice. I was not reading my bible
and I was not spending time in prayer. I thought
being preached to at church in Sunday school,
Sunday morning worship, and Wednesday night
was enough for me. I didn’t know what the Lord
was doing in my life because I wasn’t on good
speaking terms with Him. What’s the Lord doing
in your life?
Do you have a good answer to that question?
Are you on speaking terms with Him? Maybe
like me, you get enough Bible on Sundays.
Maybe you have walked away from Him and
aren’t even in church right now. Maybe your
life looks good on the outside, but the inside is
broken. Jesus will speak to you, but you must
listen. Listening happens by humbling ourselves
and drawing near to Him through regular bible
reading and prayer time. Not with a group, not
in church, but just you alone with Him. Can I
encourage you to get your Bible out? Knock the
dust of the cover, grab a cup of coffee and find a
quiet place to spend some time with Jesus today.
Listen to His voice and obey what He tells you!
