Under the
Bleachers
We are nearing the end of the school year and most sporting events have ended
for the season! The Jenkins County Track and Field Teams are still competing
and will be in the regional tournament soon. Stay tuned for results. High school
baseball is in the playoffs this week, check out the article all about the playoffs.
Tennis finished a successful season.
As the year winds down for high school sports, it is important to note that this
year has been one of the most successful seasons in Jenkins County sports history.
The War Eagles have competed at the highest level in every sport this season.
Congratulations to the teams and their coaches.
The Atlanta Braves had a 6-game win streak snapped on Sunday night. I take
credit for the snap in the losing streak. I have traveled for two games this season
to see the Braves play. In both games, the Braves lost. At this same point in 2023,
the Braves were 14-6 and V2 game in the lead over the Phillies. Today, the Braves
are 14-6 and 1 game in the lead over the Phillies. It seems like history often repeats
itself. Hopefully, it will be the same this season and the Braves will win another NL
East Championship. Hopefully, this year the team will make it much further.
The NBA playoffs have begun. The NBA is usually not watched a lot, or it does not
seem that way. Oklahoma and Boston seem to be the present favorites. A lot can
happen in the weeks that playoffs last. The NBA, during playoffs, is the best time
to watch the playoffs. It is during this time that the defense works harder and the
offense makes amazing shots. Every so often a long shot will arise and win, but that
is not the norm in the NBA. It seems like the top seeds advance and play for the
championship.
Caitlin Clark, who was talked about recently in Under the Bleachers was drafted
number 1 in the WNBA draft this past week. She was one of the most decorated
players in women’s basketball history.
As you prepare for the summer and the hot days ahead. Enjoy the cool weather
now, get out from Under the Bleachers and enjoy, and then prepare to hide in the
heat of the days that are coming. Enjoy some sports, but most importantly learn to
enjoy the Lord and His goodness. Long for the Lord. In these days that may not be
as busy, remember Psalm 42:1, “As a deer pants for flowing stream, so pants my
soul for you, O God.”
Have a great week!

Baseball Playoffs Set to Begin
The War Eagles started the season 0-11 in a rebuilding season. Everyone
knew the season would be tough for the War Eagles after losing several seniors
who were the keys to success last year. However, after dropping three games
to regional rival ECI, the War Eagles reeled off nine straight wins, and the War
Eagles finished as region runner-up and will now host the first round of the
GHSA Class A Division 2 playoffs.
The War Eagles will host Clinch County from Homerville, GA. The Panthers
will make the long trek bringing in their 16-14 overall record to Jenkins County.
Presently, the Panthers are ranked in the top 15 in Class A Division 2.
The games will be played on Tuesday, April 23rd, and will begin at 4:00 PM.
The game format is the best out of three games. Game two will begin 30 minutes
after the first game ends. If necessary, there will be a third game on Wednesday
afternoon. The game on Wednesday is scheduled to begin at 5:30. The games will
be played at the Jenkins County Recreation Department.
In the last nine regional games of the season, the War Eagles were swinging a
hot bat. The War Eagles averaged more than eight runs per game in that period,
scoring seventy-five runs. This was up from five runs per game in the previous
eleven games they played. The War Eagles will have to have a hot bat heading
into the playoffs as Clinch County has scored a lot of runs this season with a
season average of more than seven runs per game. Clinch County comes from a
very tough region. They feature three teams in the top 15, including #1 ranked
Charlton County and 4th ranked Lanier County.
Other teams in the War Eagles’ region include top-10 ranked ECI hosting
Atkinson County. Montgomery County, the fourth seed from Region 3 traveling
to top-ranked Charlton County. McIntosh County Academy, the third seed will
travel to Lanier County.
The Jenkins County Times will update you as results come in!
After a rocky start to the season, Head Coach Zac
Clark and Senior Reid Weathersby will look to
lead the team through the GHSA State Playoffs.

Season Ends
The Jenkins County War Eagles and Lady War Eagles finished their successful
season last week as they fell in the GHSA State Playoffs. The Lady War Eagles
faced off against Clinch County and hosted the first round. The Lady War Eagles
fell to Clinch County 3-2.
On Thursday afternoon, the War Eagles faced Miller County. Miller County,
traveling more than four hours, took down the War Eagles 3-0.
The season was the most successful in War Eagle tennis history. As the team
ended their season the boys’ team finished as regional champions while the girls’
team finished as regional runner-up.
