Christ, and to know this
love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled
to the measure of all the fullness of God. - Ephesians
3:i7-i9ln the first century Jesus of Nazareth inspired
a movement. A community of people whose lives
were centered on Jesus Christ and committed to
living the way of God's unconditional, unselfish,
sacrificial, and redemptive love. Before they were
called "church" or "Christian," this Jesus Movement
was simply called "the way."
Today I believe our vocation is to live as the
Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement. But how
can we together grow more deeply with Jesus Christ
at the center of our lives, so we can bear witness to
his way of love in and for the world?The deep roots of
our Christian tradition may offer just such a path. For
centuries, monastic communities have shaped their
lives around rhythms and disciplines for following
Jesus together. Such a pattern is known as a "Rule
of Life." The framework you now hold - The Way of
Love: Practices for Jesus-Centered Life - outlines a
Rule for the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.
It is designed to be spare and spacious, so that
individuals, ministry groups, congregations, and
networks can flesh it out in unique ways and build a
church-wide treasure trove of stories and resources.
There is no specific order you need to follow. If you
already keep a Rule or spiritual disciplines, you might
reflect and discover how that path intersects with
this one. By entering into reflection, discernment and
commitment around the practices of Turn - Learn
- Pray - Worship - Bless - Go - Rest, I pray we will
grow as communities following the loving, liberating,
life-giving way of Jesus. His way has the power to
change each of our lives and to change this world.

Ford Baptist Church. Each night we will be diving
into God’s word through activities, crafts, recreation,

“The Law of Reaping
and Sowing”
Galatians 6:7-8- “Do not be deceived: God
is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that
will he also reap. For the one who sows to his
oum flesh will from the flesh reap corruption,
but the one who sows to the Spirit will from
the Spirit reap eternal life. ”
There is a principle in scripture referred to as “the
law of reaping and sowing,” which I first learned
about as a young boy. In those days, I would often
get caught red-handed and resort to lying instead of
taking responsibility and telling the truth. My mom,
however, would consistently remind me of three
things: it’s easier to remember the truth than a he, be
sure your sins will find you out, and you reap what
you sow.
What does it mean to reap what you sow? To
understand the concept of reaping what you sow,
let me use a simple gardening illustration. Imagine
going to a local garden store, purchasing a bag of
squash seeds, taking them home, planting them in
the ground, watering them, and waiting for them
to grow. Eventually, you will harvest squash to eat.
While there may be external factors, such as being an
inexperienced gardener or deer consuming your crop,
the absence of squash would not be due to the squash
seeds failing to produce squash plants. No one
plants squash seeds and expects to find watermelons.
You know if you plant squash seeds, they will only
produce squash.
Galatians 6:7-8, the law of reaping and sowing,
teaches us that we will one day harvest what we have
planted. This means that the decisions we make
today produce fruit. Poor decisions, poor fruit. Wise
decisions, wise fruit. What kind of choices are you
making? Do you accept responsibility and tell the
truth, or do you tell lies and make excuses?
Our daily choices not only have immediate and
future consequences but also eternal consequences.
We can sow to the flesh or sow to the Spirit. Sowing
to the flesh is living a me-centered life - my wants, my
desires, my dreams, what makes me feel good, what
makes me happy. Sowing to the Spirit is surrendering
to Jesus, dying to myself, and following Him - and
then doing it again every day until we die. Sowing
to the Spirit is a life lived not for self, but for Jesus.
Did you know that your daily decisions have eternal
consequences? Are you choosing to live for yourself,
for “me”, or are you choosing to live for Jesus?
