School Food Hero Day is an annual celebration dedicated to recognizing and
appreciating the hardworking individuals who prepare and serve meals in schools
across the nation. CelebratecTannually on the first Friday of May, School Food
Hero Day was established to acknowledge the crucial role that school food service
staff play in ensuring students receive nutritious meals. Nutrition is a cornerstone
of educational success, as well-fed students are better learners. School food
professionals work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to plan, prepare, and
distribute balanced meals that comply with strict nutritional standards. This
day serves as a reminder of these individuals' dedication and care throughout
the school year. In many ways, they are the backbone of the educational system,
contributing not only to the health but also to the educational achievements of
students by combating hunger and providing a stable foundation for daily school life.
This past Friday, we celebrated our school food heroes by treating them to
lunch and allowing them to sit and eat while the central office staff served the
middle and high school students lunch. There is no doubt these folks are heroes
in the Jenkins County School System. I want to tell you what they have done since
the beginning of school. They have prepared and served 125,402 breakfast meals and
151,626 lunch meals. That is 277,028 total meals from August 2023 to April 2024. That
is a lot of food. They have done this with 8-9 staff a day. When serving, there are three
hot lines. That means each server has served an average of 93,767 meals. When you put
that into perspective, it is amazing what our school food service employees do daily.
The contributions of school food heroes are substantial, impacting aspects of
student life beyond mere nutrition. Access to healthy school meals is linked to
improved student concentration, higher test scores, and reduced absenteeism. For
many students, meals provided at school are the most consistent and nutritionally
balanced food they receive. The importance of these meals cannot be overstated.
By providing such essential services, school food staff play a direct role in shaping
the educational experiences and future health of students. Their work supports
public health initiatives and educates young minds about healthy eating habits.
I want to publicly thank the staff of the Jenkins County School System’s School
Food Service. They work each day and impact every single student in our school
system. That is an important and impactful job. Many times, it is a thankless
job. But when you talk to them, they say the same thing: "We do it for those kids.
That’s what it is about.” To show you their dedication to the job ; even after we
surprised them with a meal and told them a hot low country boil was waiting for
them, they ensured that we understood exactly what to do so the kids woulcfbe
fed. We basically had to run them out of the kitchen. For that, I am thankful and
proud that we have a group of dedicated individuals who love and greet our kids
with a smile every day. So, if you know any of our school food staff, tell them you
are thankful for what they do the next time you see them. I know I am!!!

So, since Bam has been laid up with the broken foot, I have been chauffeuring
her around on Wednesdays to deliver papers around Sylvania. It has been a great
bonding experience! She and I ride down the country roads in Screven County,
y’all the county is huge, listening to Luther Vandross and singing at the top of our lungs.
I have found that I really enjoy it. But don’t tell Bam. There will come a time
when she is back on her feet and I must say, I just might miss those Wednesdays,
well Tuesdays now because it just works better that way.
I have realized however that Bam stays gone all day because she’s visiting. “I
gotta get the gossip!” She explains as she gets back in the car. “No, you gotta get
the lead out Bam.” I retort. With me pushing, we can have papers delivered in two
hours. She and I have a pack of crackers a piece and a Mr. Pibb as we ride down
the road, air conditioning at full blast!
Is there a point to this story you ask? Probably, Bam and I have worked
together for three years, and I think we are just now understanding one another.
Sometimes it’s just the little things that keep us focused. So, if you see me out
there deliver papers, I’m keeping focused.
That’s all for now, take care!
